My new ASAT deluxe with an extra toggle switch

Post by dhgleaves »

Hello. Here is my newest acquisition. Image and Image which is an ASAT Deluxe Semi-Hollow. The interesting thing is that the guy who imported it installed an additional toggle switch, which allows you to split the pick-ups separately. In other words, insteaad of having both pickups single-coil or double-coil, you can have one single and the other double, or vice-versa. Anyone seen this modification before? It will take me a while to figure out when to use it. Thanks. David

This can be an interesting modification as long as the pickups output remain in balance. Let us know what you find out after you spend some time with it. Gorgeous guitar, by the way.

I did it to my ASAT Deluxe years ago.

Image

It now has a Dimarzio Air Norton in neck and Dimarzio Evolution in bridge, made the stock coil split switch to go to bridge only, wired the push pull to split the neck only, and added a 4 way switch. I was thinking ASAT Deluxe (HH), Bluesboy (HS), ASAT Classic (SS), ASAT HB (SH) and more all rolled into one with 4-way! It is mainly a hotter version of the ASAT Deluxe. I will say these pups work very well together and the Air Norton split does a fine single coil. The Evolution is more aggressive to me than the JB. All in all I have been satisfied. Haven't had it out in a while, but this makes me want to hear all those options again.

Thank you, and the picture really doesn't do justice to the beauty if this guitar. So what would lead to the pickups' output not being in balance? I don't know exactly what the guy did when he added the 2nd toggle switch.

Thank you. The pictures that I took make it look sort of orange, but I think it's cherry burst. This page http://www.chorder.com/electric-guitars ... ollow-3480 which I think is the same colour, lists virtually every specification except weight. However, it is very light, which was one of the things that I liked about it. No sore back after playing a couple hours.

The guitar was designed with one toggle switch which splits both buckers when it is engaged. I can assume that G&L designed the electronics such that the outputs from both split pickups are in balance when the toggle is in this position. Now with the additional toggle, you have the options of combining one bucker with one split coil, which was not intended in the original design. So it is possible that the outputs of the pickups in these added combinations may not be in balance, but you can tell when you try these toggle switch positions yourself. Your ears will tell you whether these new combinations give you useful sounds.
