locking tuners for tribute legacy

Post by ofer_shragay »

Hi,
I was looking for locking tuners and found similar shape at Kiesel. The guys at Kiesel said that it might not fit as they don't have experience with it.
I have ordered one tuner for test and fits right in with no drilling modification or anything.
the center pole (hope that it is the right term in English) is about 2 mm shorter than the tuners i have but i don't think that it is a problem. the tuner link is: http://www.kieselguitars.com/products/CLT6C
it is US made and 19:1 ratio.
just to make sure that the new low height tuners would be OK i have ordered also tusq nut: http://www.graphtech.com/products/produ ... ned-w-cort
it is 12" radius so, i think it should fit better than Fender nut. I did not get the nut or the whole set of 6 tuners yet, i have only pictures of the single tuner installed.

Found another post which might be helpful: Questtion: locking tuners for G&L Tribute S-500.

Hope this helps.

Can you post your photos, since this appears to be the first drop-in solution which has been posted. For posting photos, see: Tutorial: Posting photos.

Thanks.

Another option for locking tuners for Tribute G&Ls would be the Hipshot locking tuners with the universal mounting plate. They would install without any modifications to the guitar, and you would go back to the originals if necessary.

Once you get these installed, can you also comment on their quality? I have a Tribute that I was either going to install some Sperzels (which will require drilling) or Hipshots (which won't) but I'm now curious regarding these. You may have made a very important find. David

And would you also mind posting a picture of the tuner from below (i.e., showing the locator pins). I am hopefully attaching a picture of a Tribute Legacy tuner (top) and a Kluson locking tuner (below) that I bought after the seller told me that it would fit the Tribute. It did not because the locator pins are farther away from the main shaft.

sorry for being late, i am used to posting pictures in the thread itself. anyway i have uploaded some pictures to my new Instagram page:
https://www.instagram.com/shragayofer70/

you can see the 2 tuners side by side - installing the Kiesel one was easy, re-stringing was easy as well as it is a locking tuner...
for now it looks really good and the low E seems to be more stable (for the short time i used it)

As a follow-up to this, I also ordered a set of these, and they were an easy drop-in replacement on my Tribute Legacy. So now, we seem to know of at least one such kind of locking tuner for Tribute guitars, assuming they are all the same (which I'm not sure about).

thanks - good to know.
i have also installed the Graphtech strat cort nut - it is almost 1 mm shorter than the plastic nut i got and fits better.
But now i installing a stewmac 1 degree shim in the neck (to lower the action) and this might end up in rising the nut again...
I had a piece of sand paper between the neck and the body - not in the center and not on the whole length... who ever made a setup in the factory was lazy.

I just got these tuners after finding out about them on this site. They are somewhat shorter than the stock tuners. I think this is going to be fine, but i figured folks might want to know. Here is a photo, the two rightmost tuners have been replaced. You will see that the holes for the strings are only a little lower, but it does change the angle of the string over the nut a little. In any case, they are very nice and dropped right in, super easy to replace. Also, the price is very good for a good quality locking tuner.

Did you only get two (not a whole set)? If I was going to do that, I think I'd move them around and put the shorter ones on the B and high E strings. With staggered sets, those are the shortest.

I bought a set but replaced them one at a time to make it easier to reuse my strings, which are still pretty new. Worked like a charm. Because of the way I swapped them out, it was easy to see how much shorter these are.

Paul,

It makes total sense the posts of the locking tuners are shorter. It has all to do with string break angle over the nut. With traditional tuning machines, you usually have a couple of wraps around the post increasing that break angle with every turn if they wrap downwards. With locking tuners, the strings are supposed to be pulled through as taut as you can and have as few, preferably none, wraps around the post (although that is pretty hard for the high-E string). Hence, the hole in the post has to be lower than on traditional tuners to create that same break angle.

Hope this explains what you are observing.

you should be able to remove the string tree after you get all 6 in because of the new break angle. technically. I personally wouldn't but it is an option.

Yes. These are a direct drop in for the S-500 Tribute. No drilling required.
