A few months ago this Z3 popped up for sale interstate and piqued my interest. Not wanting to buy without trying I let it sit until I was in the same place as it so I could inspect it. About a month ago I was on a business trip that happened to be in the same place - it was almost like I'd gone out of my way to find something to attend so work would cover the flights.... Perks of a corporate job, gotta love them. Anyway, the guitar hadn't sold in the two months it had been listed for sale, at a very reasonable price, so I tried it out, liked how it felt and bought it. I didn't realise until the got back to my hotel rooms m how bad it smelled, it must have been hung in the room of a heavy smoker. Once I got it home I dismantled it and washed and dried it three times with dishwashing soap before the smell was gone enough. I don't mind the odd cigarette, but this thing was offensively bad.
I didn't have a chance to plug it in when I bought it, and didn't expect to like the sound, not being the biggest fan of MFD pickups. The plan for this guitar was always use it as a test bed for something I've been wanting to see G&L do for a long time - a standard Tele pickup set with a saddle lock bridge. Getting my hands on something suitable to try this out is what took the longest as I didn't want to buy an ASAT Special just to have to cut up the body. The Z3 with its swimming pool route was always the perfect candidate although I'd never seen one fir sale in Australia and didn't expect to. I roughed out a pick guard and this is what I put together
Some observations-
- The bridge pickup is a full 10mm farther from the bridge than a standard Tele which alters the sound considerably
- Tall pickups are required to make up for the additional height of the SLB
- Cutting pickguards is very tricky without the right tools!
Overall a worthwhile experiment but not a winner. Too much of that Tele sound lies in the bridge. I'd like to experiment further with this concept, perhaps adding a metal plate under the pickguard to mimic the Tele bridge but that's for a later date.
I'm actually very happy with the standard Z3 pickups, and short of adding a super-switch to get neck + bridge pickup combo I'll be leaving this one stock.
As an aside, the baggage handlers damaged the case significantly on the flight home, making three damaged cases from three flights where I've checked my guitar in. What can you do....

Hey Jaime,
Congratulations on the score and those mods are way cool. It's a shame the tone didn't hit the mark. With the routing you could try many options. One I have wanted to try is a Will Ray bridge pup in a Solamente configuration. Even though MFD's are not yer cup a tea, you could try it and let us know how it sounds.
Always love an business trip as a means to getting an instrument. Looking forward to the next set up.

Hey Sam, I do like the Z coils, they've got their own thing going on . The thought of a single Z coil crossed my mind too, I can't work out to go with 'Z1' or Zolamente...

Jamie, very cool guitar and an interesting experiment. Have you ever tried the G&L Asat alnico's? I think they have a more Fender type sound. -- Darwin

"Zolamente"? Trademark that name!blargfromouterspace wrote:Hey Sam, I do like the Z coils, they've got their own thing going on . The thought of a single Z coil crossed my mind too, I can't work out to go with 'Z1' or Zolamente...
G&L should build such a guitar just for the moniker.

P.S.Jamie, tell us more of the difference in sound due the the bridge pup being further away.

I'd say more prominent midrange on the wound strings would be the main difference, the same sort of difference if you were to put in a hotter pickup in the regular position but without the extra volume. It's not an improvement!yowhatsshakin wrote: P.S.Jamie, tell us more of the difference in sound due the the bridge pup being further away.

Is there a brass plate in the bottom of your bridge pickup? That, and a certain value capacitor in the circuit, might get you a lot closer to the sound your looking for...
