GAS redux: ASAT III (Alder or Swamp Ash?)

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

GAS redux: ASAT III (Alder or Swamp Ash?)

Post by themikeaustin »

All,

Today I acquired an ASAT III from a local owner. I registered the guitar (S/N: G049934) and it was already credited to someone with a handle of emmit_**. The person I bought it from was "Dave". "Emmit" listed the body wood as Alder. I was under the impression that Alder was used for "solid" finishes and Swamp Ash was used for "clear" finishes. The grain is clearly visible, so I'm leaning towards Swamp Ash. OTOH, the guitar is listed at 7 lbs and, although I haven't weighed it, is is certainly lighter than any of my G&Ls except for my semij-hollow Bluesboy.

There is no build sheet, etc. accompanying the guitar.

I've lusted after one of these guitars since seeing Scott Grove's review on YT and I must say that playing it live really justifies my obsession.

I will post photos soonish, but I'm curious about the body wood. Could Alder be underneath a three-tone sunburst finish?

TIA,

Mike

3TSB, is a standard finish and would come on Alder by default. It can be on Swamp Ash by special order like all standard finishes. Premier finishes come standard on swamp ash.

Please post some pics..

Cheers, Dan

Thanks, Dan! The guitar is out for a setup for a week or so, but I will definitely post photos soon thereafter.
