Converting ASAT Classic to ASAT Classic 'S'

Post by dalto »

I have been toying with the idea of converting my ASAT Classic to an ASAT Classic 'S'. It seems pretty straight forward. Replace the pickguard, switch, install a push pull and re-wire everything.

There are two things that seem challenging. First, I haven't taken the pickguard off but I am guessing I would have to route a larger hole where the pickups mount. Perhaps an even bigger problem is where to acquire an RWRP S500 pickup.

I though if anyone would know the answers it would be the guys here.

Here is what the pickup route looks like for both ASAT Classic and ASAT Classic 'S':

You can order the middle MFD S-500 pickup from G&L's On-Line Store: PICKUP - S-500 MFD SINGLE-COIL.

Doing this will convert your ASAT Classic to a pre-February 2011 version of the ASAT Classic 'S' model. See this in our Gallery: ASAT Classic S Wiring Diagram and Picture Diagrams.
If you want to convert to the newer version of the AC 'S', you will want to replace the neck pickup with the RW/RP version pickup. You can also get that pickup from the G&L On-Line Store: PICKUP - ASAT CLASSIC MFD NECK.

Hope this helps.

New pickguard, pickups and electronics is going to cost you $150, might as well save up the little bit extra and get another G&L. Definitely get another G&L

Thanks! I am not sure how I missed that there was drop down on that page that lets you pick the pickup position.

Yeah, I considered it but I decided that I have too many guitars so I have been trying to live by the rule that if I want to add another I have to sell one. Since I don't have anything I want to part with I was toying with the idea of modifying an existing guitar. That being said, if I am only buying one extra pickup I could do it to any of my t-style guitars. Hmm........

An ASAT Tribute would be a good choice to mod, if you've got one. You'd be able to change the neck pickup location to match the USA models while you're at it...

You might consider converting your ASAT Classic to the ASAT Classic III. That way you would only need to buy the RW/RP neck pickup and put it in the middle position.
See: http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/US ... /index.asp.

Just a thought.
