Quarter-sawn maple neck?

Post by krugerj »

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well. I am just wondering what wood I've got here on my ASAT neck, looks to me like it might be quarter-sawn maple as the grain does run vertically, although I'm no wood expert.

Also, any benefits between flat sawn and quarter sawn other than supposed strength of the wood?

If you could, please do enlighten me! Cheers.

That looks like a flat-sawn neck to me. The quarter-sawn neck on my SC-2 shows only straight lines on the back of the neck, not complete grain circles. The benefit to quarter-sawn necks is that the neck is more stable against fore-aft bending. Personally, I don't think it's that big a deal. I've never had an issue with any of my other guitars that have flat-sawn necks.

if you have a side view of the headstock , the grain goes front side to back side across the head stock , NOT length wise .... if you have a photo I can tell real quick

Well I guess I got me a flat-sawn neck then! Anyways, I've never had a problem before with flat-sawn necked guitars I've had!

Your grain is going the length of the head stock which is not QS but I agree it's still sweet !
