The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Old Fullertone signature vs new custom order

Post by asatspecial »

Hello, everyone. Great forum.
New here, but not in the world of guitar playing. Been playing for 25y. Recently bought an asat special tribute and loving it.
Also played a Fullertone signature G&L 10 years ago and it was the best strat I ever played!
So I guess my question would be for those of you who have compared the Fullertone signature ones with the rest of 'em.
Is it really superior to others?
I sold my custom shop Fender when I bought a JV Squier because to me it sounded and felt better.
Now I'm torn between a new custom order and looking for an older Fullerton signature.
Any advice?

I had a Fullerton signature model for a while, which was really nice, but I couldn't bond with the "V" shaped neck. (I'm not sure if all Fullerton models have the V neck...) That was really the only difference I noticed between the Fullerton signature and other Legacy models.

Howdy asatspecial,

Although I am a complete ASAT nut, the Strat-style guitar always within reach is my 2001 George Fullerton Signature. The fact that the bridge pup is not going through the tone stack just resonates with me even though I believe the PTB tone stack, as found on the Legacy, is more advanced and versatile. But for that vintage vibe, you cannot go wrong with the George Fullerton Sig. And as long as you are not repulsed by that V-shape neck (also present on mine), you will be A-OK!

Wow thanks guys! That was quick!
Read and saw everything I needed, thanks for the links and tips.
My conclusion? My next G&L doesn't have to be a George Fullertone signature.
I don't like the thin vintage frets that the signatures have.
But anyway - they all sound and feel great.
So then - next dilema is "should I order a custom one through a diler (I like fatter necks and they are harder to come by) or look for an 80's regular production Legacy with a fatter neck". C or V shape it's all the same to me as long as it's fat.
The only difference being one is brand new and the other has been played. That would also be one of the things to look for (for me anyway). If the guitar is from the 80's I wouldn't want it to be in mint condition right? I want it to be heavily played for years.
I'll be in US latter this year so I'm browsing the sites that have used G&L's.
Sweet sweet decions indeed.
Thanks again and I'll be here from now on reading all this valuable info.
Been reading a lot about the two geniuses behind this company! Wow! Extraordinary people indeed!
George & Leo - thank you for your lifelong quest of trying to make us guitar nerds happy!
And the people on this forum for keeping the spirits of those two (and all the others) forever alive!

Good luck on finding an '80s G&L Legacy because they don't exist; first production year was 1992.

I have spent the last few years buying and selling guitars trying to find the "right" ones for me. Too many times have I tried to save a few bucks by buying on "off the rack" guitar only to end up selling 6 months later. At this point, if you can afford it, my advice is buy the exact guitar you want the first time. If you like a thicker neck, than order one just like you want with the neck, radius, color and shape that you desire.

Wow Craig (and dalto), thanks for that.
A lot of useful info there. Didn't know about exact years of productions for each model (sorry about that).
Should've looked harder here...
Then 90's vs custom order is what I mean.
By now I do think I'm gonna probably order one with "my specs" ;-)
We'll see.
In the meantime I can't stop playing the asat tribute! What an instrument!
