new to G&l, would appreciate some advice

Post by Horax »

I"m a long time tele player.

I've had one G&L, but I sold it two days after getting it because somebody offered me a ridiculous price for it.
It was a tribute, so I"ve never played a USA G&L.

I'm now looking seriously for a new tele type, and I did try the USA American Professional tele and was BLOWN AWAY
with the new pickups and neck.,...just freakin' fantastic.

That being said, I already have a USA American Standard Tele, so I started looking here.

I am torn between the $999 USA Ruby Red ASAT Special, or the ASAT classic of the same color.
The classic has the smaller MFD's, and the Special obviously has the jumbo MFD's. The classic
has my preferred maple neck while the Special has the rosewood.

I would apprecaite any feedback from anybdoy who could help me make this decision.
Also, looking at some from the early 2000's as well....are the early 2000's better than the newest ones?

What are your thoughts?

I play blues, country, and surf mostly....

Just my opinion, but I don't think the early 2000's guitars are better or worse then then new ones. Personally, I really like the ASAT Special with jumbo MFD pickups. I think they are extremely versatile guitars and are "special" :).

I own an ASAT Special and its the best sounding electric guitar that I own. I love the large MFD pickups they sound rich, musical, are very versatile and have great clarity. The Neck pick up is particularly good.

Just to situate you, I own a G&L S-500 and a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I play Pop, Classic Rock and Blues.

Enjoy the journey!!!!

Hi Horax,

Being a G&L fan, I don't think that you can go wrong with either guitar.

Take care,

+1

And, they are different enough that you should have one of each. ;)

Whichever one you get, please post some photos and add it to our G&L Registry.

FWIW, my $.02:

The ASAT Special pickups are among the finest single-coil pickups ever made. I have two of them and they are awesome.

You might consider an ASAT Classic S. (It's analogous to a Nashville Tele.) I've got one with MFD pickups. It's great, and the ones with alnico pickups are also fantastic.

There are lots of videos out there. I recommend "JustNick" and ProGuitarShop. These are two of the best. Here are some YT links:

oh I'm keeping my tele.
I was considering the z3, the special, and the classic with mfd's.

Not a big three pickup guy, so the z3 probably won't happen.

Is there much of a difference between the jumbo and small mfd pickups?

Here is a demo comparing the G&L ASAT Classic alnico pickups to the large MFDs.

I believe the ASAT Classic Alnico pickups were speced to give the more traditional Telecaster tone. For that reason I would strongly lean towards the ASAT Special... But then, the large MFD are my favorite pickups so I'm biased.

Hopefully the demo helps you decide which is right for you.

As for build quality, I have two recent USA built guitars. Both are top notch GbL LE-2 and an ASAT Classic S (with MFDs). I don't think you'll be disappointed which ever route you decide to go.

Cheers, Dan
