I've recently become obsessed with G&Ls and have had the good fortune to pick up a 2001 ASAT Z3 and a 1997 ASAT.
The 97 ASAT has Sperzel locking tuners on it. They were the brushed aluminum finish, so I ordered a set of black Sperzels to better match the rest of the hardware.
Unfortunately, the new set doesn't line up with the holes for the old set. Has there been some slight change in the specs of the Sperzels that would account for this?
I searched in the knowledgebase and what's in there seems to indicate that they should be a drop in replacement. Any ideas about what might be going on?
Change in Sperzel tuners?

Re: Change in Sperzel tuners?
I actually reached out to Sperzel and they said that there hasn't been any changes.
Fortunately, their headquarters is located just down the street from me so they offered to let me come down and see what the issue may be. Will update when I have more info.

Re: Change in Sperzel tuners?
I just bought a Sperzel set for my ASAT Classic "Frankencaster" in which I installed the Greg Koch Signature Fishman Fluence Telecaster system. Regrettably I had to drill a hole for each tuner as they had the two "teeth" for Strat replacement but were cyclopsy instead with one stabilizer tooth in the middle instead of the two teeth like the Fender. All is well now as I was able to get it all straight within thousandths of a variance and look and work perfectly. Hooray for me and a bowl of Fruit Loops for you. I could have and probably should have bought the cheaper Fender brand which would have required no drilling but you guys know how it is with GAS. You got it and the hell with taking it back or sending it back if you can be steady with a drill. I didn't want to put Fender locking on because of the G&L name where Sperzel is a universal name in quality upgrades. But I put Fender locking tuners on my American Standard Strat which I bought new in the Spring of this year plus Graph Tech chrome full body saddles to get rid of the "bent steel" which I think are crap. My Strat is surgical as an instrument as is the ASAT with the Fishman Fluence Greg Koch signature Tele system. The only thing I'd add is a neck on the ASH ASAT that was gloss on the fretboard side. But the radius is 12" all the way. I'd so like to have the compound radious on the Strat but a Fender neck with that compound radius is over $400. It would have made an Elite a smarter choice.

Corporal Clegg, why didn't you just go with the G&L locking tuners?

I didn't have the cash but I had credit at a Guitar Center and saw them up there on the wall while buying a roller type string tree. In some of the country courses you need to do bending behind the nut and I figure the rolling string tree to be a bit safer for that. The Sperzel purchase was impulsive.cho wrote:Corporal Clegg, why didn't you just go with the G&L locking tuners?
