Changing the neck finish

Post by kdl6769 »

I recently bought a USA Fallout in three tone sunburst with a maple neck/fingerboard that has a clear satin finish. I love the guitar, but am thinking that I should have gone for a vintage gloss finish. Is this something that G&L would do post-purchase, or would I need to go a different route? Any DIY solutions? Thanks.

You could play the living daylight out of the thing! The finish of the neck, the part your thumb and palm of the hand moves over, will turn to a "gloss" finish soon enough ;-)

AFAIK there is no post-purchase option but it'll never hurt to check with your dealer.

I have no idea how it would come out on a satin finish neck, but I know that it's not uncommon for people to apply tan or brown shoe polish to their necks to darken the color. You can google it, I'm sure.

Also, I suspect the color of the wood will naturally darken over time.

Other than that, just play it often and let the dirt and natural oils in your hands do their thing.

Wood should darken with exposure to sunlight. You don't have to put it in direct sun, just on a stand in a room where some sun gets in. The neck should darken over time. And a satin finish will eventually become a gloss finish as you play it. My Taylor's neck is as glossy as can be, but it started out satin.
