Looks like it may be an aftermarket refin… black neck plate screws + smaller black string tree screw seem to also imply someone's own customising...

I thought it was a refinish/paint , especially since the pickguard is paint matched

Hi Craig,
Serial number G023018 is (or was) an ASAT in Natural Ash, maple #2 neck completed April 13, 1988. It was built on a typical purchase order from G&L Music Sales, Inc.
Apparently, an owner of the guitar thought it would look better with a lot of blue going on.
