Hot MFDs?

Post by surfco »

Hi all.
I'm wondering which one of these pickups sound the fattest on the bridge position?
1. Comanche Z-coil
2. S-500 MFD
3. Asat special large MFD
I've seen youtube videos and my ears tell me the Comanche sounds even bigger than the Asat special on the bridge.
I want a big sound for lead on the bridge pos.
Any comments?

ASAT Special first and then S500 second with the Z coil third for fatness

my band plays a full step down and drop C ...... the Big MFD's are second to nothing on big fat sound in my collection

The regular Z-Coil is thin-ish at the bridge, in a fairly regular "Strat" sort of relationship to the neck + middle. And great if you like that.
But the Will Ray bridge Z-Coil is good if you want a chunkier version; sort of part scorchy tele, part P-90.

But based on your selection, one other pup comes to mind, and that's the overwound version of the Asat Special bridge, as fitted to SC-2's and Asat Supers. It can be found at the G&L online store (Pickups / Jumbo MFD Single-coil - Other / Asat S-3 bridge). Fatter than the regular one.

I think the Will Ray Z coils are 'hotter/fatter' according to the pickup page. (4.5K-4.7K; 7.5K-8.3K (Will Ray Signature Model Bridge pickup))

The big MFD's are probably fattest. S500 MFD's are pretty trebly, actually, but use a 1nF/1000pF cap to shift the resonant frequency lower, giving a warmer fatter sound. BTW, this is something you could try to fatten up the pickups.

Don't often see that word around here.
You have good info.

YouTube audio is meaningless for making any qualitative judgement. The transmission medium is irreparably lo-fi, and the recordings usually even more so, with unguessable variation from the truth.

If the Comanche you heard sounded good for your preferred expectation of back-pup sound, then my guess is that either:
It had a Will Ray back pup installed;
The musician had his rig set so that the guitar sounded how you like it;
The PA or sound recordist coincidentally made it sound how you like it;
or any combination of the above.

X2 with Nick , you tube video's are not helpful ...... I have a 2013 SC 2 big MFD's , 1997 S500 and 2000 Comanche with Will Ray pickup ...... the Big MFD's are second to none for big fat tone .... the S500 is deeper than the Comanche ...... don't matter if I play through a Fender Twin , Carvin V3m , Vt50 or my Messa Boogie MK V and Dual Rectifier , the Big MFD's are your best bet for the fatter sound with my gang
