MJ-4 With Quiet Pickups

Post by hunt »

Hi,

Looking for anyone who has a MJ-4 circa 2012-14. I picked one up a few weeks ago and while I really like it I find the active pickups are very quiet when compared to my passive basses. If I plug into my MarkBass the clip light turns on at about 1/2 gain on most passive basses I've tried with it. With the MJ-4 I can max the gain and it still doesn’t indicate clipping! I would expect the active pickups to start clipping on a far lower gain setting. I have tried new batteries, full bridge and neck selection along with turning all 3 eq's all the way up. The bass volume changes, but only slightly, say 25% increase past just audible. Is this just normal for the MJ-4 active pickups or do I have a problem. As it stands it feels like the dynamic are greatly hindered in its current state, but the overall tone is excellent.

Cheers,
JJH
