Here is a link to some Tube manufacturing videos, they are short . I had no idea they were so labour intensive. Pretty cool I thought.

The first video looks like the kind of work that could be easily mechanized, I wonder if the market is so small that it's just not worth it to develop the necessary machines/technology to build them the way most modern electronic components are assembled.

That's a good observation, I'm sure there is a correlation.
