Bought a G&L ... did I do right?

Post by DJLoser »

OK, OK ... I was supposed to be saving up £1500 for a Nash or a Fender 50s Hot Rod. But I got back from a gig last week, a few beers to the good, and bid £200 ($330) for a G&L ASAT Tribute T-style on eBay.

I didn't expect to win. I mean, these guitars retail for £550 here in the UK, so I figured somebody would go higher. But it turns out that I am the new owner of the damn thing, which is now on its way in the post.

Embarrassingly, I have never even played a G&L; the bid was alcohol-driven and based largely on positive online reviews. So am I gonna like it when I've got it?

Among my other guitars are a Squier Classic Vibe Tele and MIM Wilko Johnson signature model with Seymour Duncan hot vintage pickups. How will the ASAT compare? Am I about to be blown away, or about to be disappointed for blowing two hundred quid?

That's the way it starts. In a weak, alcohol-fueled moment, you get a taste of a G&L. Then you need another...and another.

Before long you're "strung out" and buying a new one every month.

I'm afraid there's no turning back now.

they do seem to multiply Will .... I was looking for Fenders a couple years ago before I found out about G&L , now have 11 G&L's ...... I had a bunch of American's before I saw my first Tribute , now that I've seen them they are a lot of Bang for the Buck , in my opinion the Tributes are better than Fender MIM's and darn close to Fender American Standard quality wise and the Tribute will have better pick ups than either Fenders

Yes.

I think you'll find the ASAT is in a whole different league. When you plug the ASAT in, keep in mind that the pickups and controls were designed to be improvements on the early Fender designs, not clones. Take some time to dial the controls in and figure out which tones work best for you. In my experience, G&Ls don't get their best sounds with all of the controls on ten.

+1. I'd go ahead and put those Fenders up for sale now. When the ASAT arrives you will want to spend your time playing it, with occasional breaks to search for your next G&L. Might as well start opening up room for them now...

Four years after my first ASAT Classic, I've settled down to a new (used) one every 3-4 months. That wasn't until I ran out of space though. The trick is to pick some obscure corner of G&L history or the catalog to focus on. My GAS got a lot better once I decided to focus on pre-BBE basses instead of every good deal on a G&L that popped up.

My first G&L was a Tribute ASAT Special Deluxe. Originally I was planning one having one HB guitar, one SC guitar, and an acoustic. The big MFDs on the ASAT are just awesome. All of a sudden I've added a LE-2, and a Tribute JB-2. I currently covetting an ASAT Classic S. Never intended to collect but that is what I'm finding myself doing. My interest are the MFD models (yes, I know the JB-2 is not a MFD). I'd like one from each major family.

I found I like my Special with the tone at 6-7 and volume around 7. The MFDs diffinately not a wide open all the time pu.

I think given a little time you'll really LIKE THE ASAT!

It started with an L2500 bass.....
Now I also have a Fallout(USA), an SC2, a Will Ray Tribute and a Legacy HB tribute.
All bought off photos and descriptions and worth every cent including shipping from USA (or NZ) to Oz.

What can I do with it? Will it make me sound like Roy Buchanan? Not that any guitar will ever make me sound remotely like Roy Buchanan, but you know what I mean ....

You might nor be able to sound like Roy Buchanan, but you can always own more guitars than Roy ever did during his lifetime. ;-)

And don't we miss him?
