Hey Guys,
I’ve had a 1995 L-5500 for about 15 years now and it has been my main workhorse. I’m looking to give it a little TLC and I have a few questions.
First, anyone know what string gauge was the bass originally designed to have?
Second, I want to replace the nut. Do you have any suggestions on what to use to replace it? I have no issues filing a nut from scratch but I’d like to know the factory specs on it. Would the L-2500 nut be a good place to start?
Thanks,
Jay Harris

See this post on string gauges used on G&L instruments. I don't think the gauge of the bass strings ever changed, but the brand did. I not sure whether the L-5500 has any of its strings thru-body. But in case it doesn't, you should be able to use a EXL170-5 set instead of EXL170-5SL.
Hope this helps,
