Also take into account that $200 in 1952 (roughly what a Telecaster would have cost) is now worth approximately $1,700. Prices, accounting for inflation have not really changed much.
I play with some horn players--those things are not cheap. Even though they don't have to buy amplifiers, some of them do purchase related gear -- wireless mics, harmonizers, etc.

It is a good read. I bought a Conn student Tenor Sax back in 1960 for $250. I could have had a new Tele for that! -- Darwin
