New old amp day

So im hoping im not the only one with this problem. You know, when something turns up and you really dont need it, but you just must have it. Its very much like the GAS problem that can be so contagious to all. The item in question was a 1984, first series Dean Markley Signature series 60, six knobs, no reverb. Well its quite beat up, its odd tan colored skin all dirty and damaged, its panels almost as bad, residue from all sorts of things stuck on it. A lot of honest hard work done for sure. But i just couldnt let it sit there neglected could I, and at a very reasonable price i might add. So its come home with me and omg, its beautiful.. One channel only, a boost button and one voicing switch, bone bare heaven. Clean and powerful when wanted and more overdrive than i could imaging this thing could ever have, just beautiful. Im guessing im not the only person with this affliction, anyone else here like to come out and tell of their problem with this disease, lol.

My most recent purchase is an '81 JCM800, just a couple weeks after getting a '94 JCM900...LOL
This seems like a great excuse to dust off some gear and take some amp porn pics.

Hi Elwood, Ahhh,, 1st series jcm800 , the holy grail for so many..Theres one available in Sydney at the moment but he certainly knows what he has, the asking price is over 2,000 AUD. That sure cured my AAS problem, well temporally anyhow lol.. The second most recent for me was an orange micro terror, for 100 bucks its surprising the sound it can produce and so easy to carry around. Im working with the son today so will post some pics in the evening.

Off topic but amp related,, Like the feeling you get when something your interested in comes along. This happened to me a few months ago, you go to visit a mate, meet another mate there and he says, did you see the amp looking thing down on Buffalo road, well all things happening stop, your just possessed by the AAS feeling. Where the hell is it and your off. I found it, 60's Jansen, made in NZ it turned out, sad looking but there. Model I 68 on the label it says.. Closed back, 12 inch size cabinet with 2 channels, not to heavy though im thinking when throwing in the boot,, back to the guys and on the net. Hassling for a screwdriver as you can imagine.. the net says , I 68,, must have 6 valves, im grinning but but thinking, hmmm, bit light for that.. Well, eventually the screwdriver was found, back off, yep, solid state all the way. The big sigh, you knew it was too good to be true, but the HIGH your on during the ride was just great, just too sad its so infrequent,

So not valve, but happy as can be that i have it,,,,,,, Im not alone im sure of this feeling, I would love to hear of your amp or guitar finds that have just happened by chance,, im thinking Elwood and Tom would have had a few of this feeling, would i be right guys,,,, Cheers

Truth be told , I've yet to crank up the new JCM800. My amp tech is on leave, and I want to have his help
to be sure the bias etc. is all within spec. There is an extra input jack, it looks like it bypasses the preamp so
I'm guessing it was for slaving this amp. I might put a PPIMV pot in it's place. So that one is on hold for another week. I'll take some pics for ya 'all in the mean time.

I had to tell my buddy that his princeton was SS, and not worth much. He's not a musician and thought
he had an old valve Princeton. I feel your pain

The amp with all the pre tubes is a 1971 Plush Congress IV PA (4 channels).
It works but needs to be gone through with deoxit. I hear shielding the leads from the input jacks
will really help with these amps. (The hot line from all those channels are just hanging out
in the open).
It uses 4 6L6 for power. I've read these are based on a Fender circuit.
I might cascade a couple channels to bring some growl into the mix.

I'll grab another cool vintage amp for another post.
I'm assuming it's Ok to turn this thread into an ongoing amp porn thread?

Here's a cool old 50's Magnatone Leilani that needs to be made safe
before I get to play with it. It has no power transformer, or grounded plug...
but it DOES have a crusty old capacitor that is all that is between one side
of the mains and the chassis (i.e. our fingers!)...so it's slated for a modern refurb
this winter if my amp tech buddy can help me with it.

The Silvertone seemed right for the 'student' theme...

That Peterson tuner is cool,
I'd be tempted if it was local. I have a Conn strobotuner that used be John Entwistle's,
no real provenance...but I can feel the Mojo when I hold it

I'll read that article, thanks Geoff...I'm just getting my feet wet in the electronics field.
There's probably a better analogy

I have a box of old and new tubes, but I'm starting to be on the lookout for NOS V1 options.

I bought that Magnatone, and another just like it for my friend (15 years ago).
His works well, though I recently called him and politely demanded he
have it made safe. I'll keep on that message.
Mine never worked, but we have a tone report from my friend from
when he had played with it. He says it sounds like a little Marshall Plexi
when pushed. So that's some incentive to get my Maggie (and his) up and running.

The first tube amp I got was a '65 Ampeg Jet. That was in 1980, from the papers classifieds.
I think I paid 50 bucks then. That replaced a Peavey Decade that I had 2 6x9 car speakers stuffed into.

This one was ailing a bit, but after a trip to my tech's...it's up to spec. ...and it sounds just like the one
I had in high school. We replaced the stock tubes (they tested weak), but all the mojo is still there (phew!).

I'm gonna have to get some vids of these beasts up online. Until then, here's some stills...

To prove this one has power...

And now, with new tubes and some tidying-

This model is the EJ-12A, or EchoJet. These were actually designed to be a slave reverb amp.

There are these clips you attach to speaker leads of the master amp for an input signal.
I haven't tried it yet, it works like a stock Jet using the input jacks on top.
I've read about one guy making a feedback loop tapping the amps own speaker

,
(with some proper resistance). Another thing I haven't yet tried

I need to get a fan on this if I play for a while..these amps get toasty !!

Great looking amp Elwood, though a bit of a rats nest regarding the wiring when you first acquired it..

A question please about the guitar that's displayed with it, what sort of bridge is on it, i don't think i have seen anything like it before or am i just not interpreting what i'm seeing correctly.

Sorry no pic of the wiring after the TLC, it is better than it was.

I did a pretty good job obscuring that stock bridge...LOL
So here is my homebrew Strat saddlelock mod, along with some hold-downs for the MIDI
pickup.

BTW, that's a Mexi Anniversary Strat with a newer MFD at the bridge,older in the middle, and a stock neck pup.
...and a Modulus graphite neck (the stock neck is wrapped up nicely for the future).

I've another favorite amp to share, stay tuned.

Elwood, love that Ampeg! Glad you found another to replace the one you had. My first amp is a '66 or so Ampeg Reverberocket 2 that I bought in 1980 for $100 from my garage band's bassist's dad. He's always regretted selling it, and I never have sold it. Super warm tone (that does generate a lot of heat), amazing reverb and tremolo.

The way they break up around 5-6 is like a nice old plaid shirt.

I've been watching vids of old ts808 and TS-9 tube screamers to see if any reissues
bring back those nostalgic tones. Sound memories must be specific like faces,
little nuances make or break identifying something as genuine. As soon as the guy in the vid
clicks to the old boxes, my endorphins start flowing, and then the realization that I'll have to pay
a bit more if I want to really feed that quest.
I just watched a minty Scholz rockman soloist go for 300$. I had just come across my old one that is in pieces.
I loved walking around the college campus with headphones and a guitar

Here's my next installment of amp porn.

It's an Atomic Space Tone by Swart, around 18 watts. I've two 6V6 RCA blackplates and a bugleboy in V1.
It's super quiet...and breaks up some when pushed. A boost pedal makes for a sensitive fender-ish experience.
There are old JBL D-131's in the maple Mesa cabs. Those speakers and this amp make for great Tele tones,
even with a Strat (I don't have a Tele or know anything about getting good country tones).

If I get energetic I'll open her up for y'all, The wiring and layout is pretty nice.
Here's Swart AST #10 (it's an early one)

We'll have to revisit this one when I get a good video making routine down.

The MIDI pickup is calibrated so the frequencies it sees at the string end can
be translated to MIDI info that triggers a soundfile. So those tiny bright frequencies
are heard as full bodied tones.

They a little made in Japan SS practice amps. They are fun with a bit of warmth.
The cabs are plywood, but it's a nice red mahogany plywood. There is also a line out and headphone jack.

The other little SS pratice amp I've liked are the Yamaha G5 Woody.( I think that's the one Jerry is playing in Sam's avatar pic)

The Yamaha G5 is the first amp I ever had . Got it and a Aria Pro 2 from a distant cousins music shop not to far from our house. I must have been 13 or 14 . My brother still has the guitar. The amplifier was stolen in 94 along with my Takamine explorer . I have had a soft spot for Yamaha ever since :- )

Kind of an interesting and little known fact about the famed Rockman: The circuit was developed by Boston's sound engineer as a device you could plug into headphones so that the guys could practice on the bus, complete with distortion and overdrive, without disturbing the rest of the band. Real easy circuit, I have built several, takes a 9v battery and you can duct tape it to your headphones. Tom Scholz basically stole the idea and turned it into the Rockman as we knew it back then. I won't divulge the engineers name cause the sour grapes have long since past but he was one of my professors in audio engineering and taught me a lot about circuits and the like. Wish I could remember half of it now but he was a great guy.

I still have my Rockman, 1st version from early 80's, still works. I think it took a bunch of AA's, but I have an ac adapter. I used to run a stereo 1/8 inch plug out of the headphone jack which split to two 1/4 inch jacks, plugged into channel 1 and channel 2 of my 70's twin reverb. Sounded pretty nice at the time.

They called the AC the "battery eliminator" IIRC.
The Chorus setting was a good one, I better not think about it. I'm still on a Ibanez TS-9/808 kick.

One thing I haven't tried, but I hear it works, is to string the whole guitar with .009's.
Shifting pitches appropriately.
I like the piano played on guitar, slides up a string make for a smooth chromatic run that you can't get
on a keyboard. Organ is fun too

I have a couple Aria Pro 2 ES335 copies, nice guitars. I'm still pining for a clear green Daion.
I tried one in 1981, liked it..but I couldn't afford it. I did buy a Yamaha 345ii acoustic that year.

Off to warm up that '69 Sunn so the tubes will glow nicely for the camera.

Love the Swart amp, Elwood. I tried one and liked it a lot, but it was too redundant with my Ampeg (tremolo, reverb). But oh, that Comanche VI of yours!!! What a beauty! Was that the one found by a TDPRI member and sold on eBay in 2007 or so?

Okey Dokee...

This is one heavy amp.
I bought it because of it's history, so I wasn't terribly dissappointed when it showed up and obviously needed
work. The power transformer was bouncing around, the two prong cord was frayed...I wasn't about to fire it up.
I found a good amp tech and he had fun bringing this back to life.
I confess to having new handles installed (there was already an extra on one side). No regrets...
...this is one Heavy amp.

Here's a very faded stencil marking it's early history. I think it was '68-69 that Steve was a Sunn Endorsee.

I'm really happy it was the power tranny that needed replacing and not the output transformer.
Check out that huge chunk of iron, alot like the Dynaco amps that Sunn used to springboard themselves.
There's no shortage of overhead and deep bass .
This is one heavy amp

I discovered a setting on my camera that really captures the glow of the tubes. More than the naked eye !
The first is what it looks like to the eye...then check out the second shot.

It uses 4 6550's for power. I have yet to turn it past 4

I'll see what I can dig up next,

Tom Scholz took the circuit from the ones used and built by the sound guy and took it to market. This was done after the sound guy was on hiatus between tours.

It was only 10 bucks plus shipping (12 bucks).

I'm not sure where I'll use it, but you can be sure I'll do my best to match the impedances
and get it overdriven with some MFDs , or maybe it'll be a clean boost.
I'll let ya know how it turns out.

lol, love the radio shack amp, just too cute, it reminds me of the Micro Terror. I have my eye on a Peavey Triumph 60 at the moment, the price is right but its half way across the country from me and not cheap to transport, their quite heavy for a 1x12. I have a soft spot for Peavey amps and luckily for me they turn up at a bargain prices. You can never not buy a bargain right, lol.

Have you fired the JCM up yet Elwood, can i ask is it a head or combo and if its a head what cabinets might you try it through?

I haven't, maybe this weekend we can throw it on the bench.
It's a head. I have a 4-12 with 2 greenbacks,a vintage 30, and a G12H30 anniv. ...
so they all should break up pretty easy. I'll also try it with 4 JBL D131's, since I have 'em here.

I have another 4-12 , but it's a Marshall bass cab with 4 150 watt sidewinders, they aren't going to break up much. I'll try it though...might make for a nice big sound?

, I only have one cab, a 2x12 Redcoat combination. I was lucky enough to buy this exact cabinet from Jon who did this demo of the Man o War and the Governor , 300 bucks with the original Celestions thrown in with the deal, Seventy 80's, sold them for 40 bucks each,, Couldn't not buy it..

I think this is a good example of the importance of a speakers final roll in an amplifiers tone. Worth listening too just for the playing as well

, Reportedly to be Billy Gibbons combination at one time so the comments say, maybe only gossip though, The only other speakers i have are 2 Peavey Scorpions, one loose and one in the Special 112, a Partiot Texas Heat in the Encore 65 and 2 loose Egnater Elite 80,s, Celestion Classic Lead rebadged they say, 70 dollars each, bought 3 weeks ago, had to buy them,,

Please don't try to listen to this demo with a phone and phone speakers, it just wont work to hear this individuality. Its actually put down pretty good and needs good reproduction to hear the differences. Pickup, Shiba drive, valve amplification, nice speakers, heaven to my ears,,just love it,, i'm so glad guitar tones make me feel this way,,

One of my favorite youtubers is Johan Segborn, he just uploaded a clip of a Dynacord Amigo amp.
I love mine.
I guess that'll be the next in my pictorials.
