Upgrade controls or pickups??

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Upgrade controls or pickups??

Post by SeaMinor »

I like the ASAT Bluesboy. I am more familiar with a strat and by comparison it seems like the Bluesboy has less output volume. I think it has a very dynamic voicing, lots or nuance with finger picking, so I'm hesitant to replace the pickups. It seems like the Indonesian models might benefit form a pot/cap upgrade?? Thansk for any advice.

If the pots aren't broken I wouldn't bother- it's not going to make any difference to the sound.
Have you tried adjusting heights of the pickups? They should be easily as loud as a typical strat - try moving them closer to the strings.

Upgrading the pots and switch is worthwhile in my opinion. The parts used in the Tributes aren't the best quality, notably the pots which started to make crackling noises after a while of heavy use, plus they don't have a smooth taper to begin with which compromises the handling and feel when you want to use the full range of adjustment. If you run everthing full open then this is not an issue, of course.
