Re: New G&L offset model: Doheny!
The announcement went out to Dealers on 8/21 and I asked G&L when I could post about this new model and
was told that the announcement will be made September 12.
So stay tuned for further details in September.

I got the go ahead from Dave to post the Dealer Preview info:Craig wrote:The announcement went out to Dealers on 8/21 and I asked G&L when I could post about this new model and

DEALER PREVIEW: THE NEW G&L DOHENY™
Introducing G&L Doheny: the Evolution of the Offset
Inspired by the classic surf sound born in Southern California, the new G&L Doheny™ takes its name from the iconic beach in the heart of Orange County
where '60s surf pioneers became legends. Since those halcyon days, both music and surfing have evolved far beyond their roots, and so has the the performance of the gear.
Doheny takes the bolt-on offset-body into new sonic territory with newly developed Magnetic Field Design™ jazz pickups, the first on any production G&L. Naturally,
these new pickups will invite comparison to Leo’s jumbo MFD™ ASAT® Special pickups, given they employ a narrow bobbin aperture and broad coil splay.
But Doheny's MFD pickups are more about jangle than twang, just as they should be for a guitar like this. With a classic jazz bobbin aperture wrapped with traditional Formvar wire,
these pickups just might be the approach Leo would have taken had he been with us a few years longer.
So what’s it like? The sound is rich in harmonics yet surprisingly full, the result of carefully researching and applying Leo’s creative work across the decades.
The Doheny pickups deliver the experience fans have hoped for, with their flexibility maximized by the PTB tone system that allows echoes of yesteryear while
delivering more output and range for today’s music. Add in Leo’s finest vibrato for enhanced tuning stability and improved sustain, and the results are astounding.
Ron Moreno, National Sales Manager, has a special announcement for G&L dealers:
"The official launch date of the Doheny is September 12, and we're now taking orders so your store can have them in stock when the media campaign begins.
All of us at G&L are thrilled with the new Doheny, as it was an unparalleled opportunity to visualize just where Leo Fender himself might have taken the offset guitar.
We're sure your customers will be delighted."
The personal name, likeness and signature of Mr. Clarence Leo Fender are property of G&L Musical Instruments / BBE Sound, Inc. G&L is not associated with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation.

Yes, I love that they came out with new MFD pickups! I can't wait to hear them and compare them to the existing large MFDs. I assume they will make them available to purchase separately.
Now, all they need is to do is to make the MFD in a standard humbucker form factor...

Very cool, always wondered when a model like this would come out.
Now inquiring minds want to know:
Who is Doheny?
When will the "Jazzmaster" tone circuit switches be added?
Looking forward to hearing clips.

Doheny isn't a bad name, I suggested MANY (none of which stuck). Doheny is better than the original name they had in mind.
I hope people fall in love with this model. It is awesome.

I checked with Spencer and he says:
The Doheny will be available left handed. We're still completing tooling for it, so there will be an added lead time for left handed pieces at the start.

Re: New G&L offset model: Doheny!
I'd love for them to offer a G&L approach to a traditional JM circuit (Perhaps a four way blade switch uptop) and a private label Mastery Bridge Setup, but they aren't entering the market that way. If they get enough requests, perhaps they will respond.sam wrote:Very cool, always wondered when a model like this would come out.

I might have preferred a more traditional bridge set up too.
Still very curious about this guitar but I don't know if it will truly satisfy my desire to own a J-master style guitar.

The JM circuit would add to the unique style, but I am such a Saddle Lock fan I would have to go with that bridge. IMHO that would keep it more G&L and not another JM copy, but there are smarter marketing guys out there than me. I would just have to figure out how to load it all on an ASAT!

I like that they have new MFD pickups, DFV and Saddle-Lock bridge options AND the PTB circuit, too! I think Dave and Co are following their motto of "What would Leo Do?" and have a winner here.sam wrote:The JM circuit would add to the unique style, but I am such a Saddle Lock fan I would have to go with that bridge. Re: New G&L offset model: Doheny!
Point well taken, that said, there are more than few things that offset players see as non-negotiable- the two-piece vibrato and bridge are one of those things. Mastery has done the work of making that setup reliable and also retains the secondary undertones that give the JM guitars their signature sound. And, they private label their hardware. It would be the best of both worlds- at least offering it an option- the same way you can get an ASAT with a Bigsby, would be complete sense.Craig wrote:I like that they have new MFD pickups, DFV and Saddle-Lock bridge options AND the PTB circuit, too! I fully agree with you here. If people want a pure Fender JM clone, then buy a Fender! No harm done there. But this is a "JM" with different pups (and likely better), definitely a better vibrato if you go the DFV way, and a much better tone stack with the PTB.
I got my order in and it looks pretty much like the Three-tone Sunburst in the ad slick but with DFV, creme pup covers, control knobs, and selector tip, 12" rosewood board with pearl block inlays, and #4 neck (4NK) neck. Very much looking forward to that one.

Will do so when she comes in. Now I totally understand why G&L "developed" the block inlays and came out with Surf Green. And Sunset Coral, mentioned in other fora, might be a great color just for this model too. I'm just more of a traditional guy so Three-tone Sunburst it is.Craig wrote:Will look forward to your NGD post! (I'm eyeing that one on the left in the Ad. I'd do a Sunset Coral or a Burgundy Mist...Tangerine Metallic with Matched Headstock, Rosewood and Pearl Blocks, Cream Covers and Knobs, White Perloid Pg. I'd go saddle lock so I could swap in a Mastery Bridge Setup...just need a chrome plate to cover the saddle lock foot route...(can you tell I REALLY want a JM vibrato?)

Not for me. The SC2 is the best offset guitar shape ever, and something about this doesn't look right - maybe the pickguard.

Frankly, I am more interested in trying those pickups in another body, like a legacy or ASAT Z3. I have never liked the pickup selector on the upper bout like that. I really hope they offer the pickups separately at the g&l store.

After listening to the video demo, I am super excited about the pickups. However, I'm not a big fan of that body type. Like someone else mentioned above, getting those pickups on an SC-2 body would be awesome. It's cool to see G&L putting out new stuff. Would be great to see it happen more frequently.
*EDIT* Just saw over on the G&L Instagram page that a Tribute Version may be in the works for next year. Check the comments on the announcement post

I much more prefer a usable vibrato, which also stays in tune like the dual fulcrum is.mutts wrote:I might have preferred a more traditional bridge set up too.

DFVs certainly stay in tune, and are eminently useful, yet when a player's style doesn't require one, it ends up being superfluous. Some players (I am one of them) like to keep it simple. Yeah, some guys like a 3 piece suit, and others prefer to leave the vest at home. Sure the vest is well made and comfy - but that's not enough to make them wear it when that ain't their thing.Miles Smiles wrote:I much more prefer a usable vibrato, which also stays in tune like the dual fulcrum is.mutts wrote:I might have preferred a more traditional bridge set up too.

EDIT: That being said, if I am not mistaken, this looks like a traditional bridge on this beautiful 3 tone sunburst

Re: New G&L offset model: Doheny!
The G&L Saddle-Lock bridge is an optional bridge. I believe mutts is referring to the FMIC Jazzmaster tremolo bridge as the "traditional bridge".DanDoulogos wrote:DFVs certainly stay in tune, and are eminently useful, yet when a player's style doesn't require one, it ends up being superfluous.
Still very curious about this guitar but I don't know if it will truly satisfy my desire to own a J-master style guitar.
EDIT: That being said, if I am not mistaken, this looks like a traditional bridge on this beautiful 3 tone sunburst
