G&L Legacy USA - Is this real?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

G&L Legacy USA - Is this real?

Post by schnoogie84 »

Hi there,

Big fan of G&L guitars - I already have a Legacy Special (yes it has been added to the registry) but thinking about getting another. I am thinking about hitting the buy button on the ebay auction below for another legacy USA, though this one appear so have has the pick guard and pickups swapped out. I'm not overly concerned about this, as I have Fralin pickups on another guitar, but I have small concern that the guitar could possibly be a tribute in disguise with a modified headstock? Reasons I am thinking this are:

1. Serial Number is in an unusual place, and not on a 'plate' like my USA legacy special. Also it is a CL0 number, though from what I can gather this would mean it would have been built in 1997? Is this normal?
2. No 'guitars by leo' under the G&L logo.
3. Given that the pickguard has been swapped out, difficult to tell from the pots etc, though they are CTS pots.

Everything else, including Tuners, seems to match my legacy special. What are your thoughts?

Looks authentic to me (aside from the electronics). The plate was only used for a about 4-5 years. The CL serial number is located in the right spot, the neck appears to be bi-cut and the birthmark (brown dot) is on the back of the headstock.

Independent of the authenticity issue, that seems expensive to get to Australia. The price is close to 1k in AUD and postage shows up at $175. I would think you could find one here that you could see in person before buying, but it depends on where you are. As I just mentioned in another post, I'm in Adelaide, and I know a couple for sale here.

And actually check the feedback on the guy. There is a very recent negative one that appears to be about that guitar (G&L Legacy USA W/ Fralin Pickups..BIG Upgrade! ). It says "Guitar had a crack. Seller said it was normal. Had to have eBay refund. Beware. "

dhgleaves - I think you just saved me buying a broken guitar! I think you are right, might look around for one locally that I can see in person. I'm in Melbourne, but occasionally in Adelaide for work. Ill look for your other posts if you know of any good examples for sale.

Its not a Legacy, and it may be a bit overpriced, but have you seen this https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/nunawad ... 1154594547 one? It's in your area at least.
