Bone Nut... what kind of bone?

Post by mojokorn »

My new G&L has a bone nut. Got me wondering, what kind of bone? Human, Elephant, Cromagnum man? Probably just a cow or pig... moooo, oink.

Sounds pretty damn good though!

It is not likely we will be able to find out exactly what kind of bone, other than it is 100% natural bone.

I agree that they sound very good indeed.

My dad owned an Abattoir when I was growing up. He'd sell every part of the cows he butchered, even the bones. I used to wonder, who would buy a cow bone? But apparently bones have all kinds of uses.

But more to the point; If it is a high end, US made guitar, the bone nut is almost certainly cow bone from either the fermur, the humerus, or the pelvis.

You'll notice the acoustic difference in nut materials more on a hollow (or semi hollow) body than on a solid body instrument, but it is unlikely you'd notice the difference between cow bone, horse bone, or elephant bone for that matter, on a solid body guitar.

That's what I've been led to believe at least.
