G&L Legacy USA HSS specs?

Post by Shuko »

I'm a little confused..

I see this USA G&L Legacy HSS on the G&L site listed with CLF-100 Alnico single coils in neck and middle position and a AW4370 in bridge position and G&L Standard tuners.

http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/US ... /index.asp

.. and in some places with G&L Alnico single coil pickups and a Seymour Duncan JB (TB-4) bridge pickup and G&L locking tuners..

Code: Select all

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/G-L-USA-Legacy-HB-Jet-Black-Electric-Guitar-w-Hardshell-Case/351897262458?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D41397%26meid%3D2083071d23624c9fa2d88a2bfb4fc626%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D302224092896
Also sometimes in Swamp ash and sometimes in Alder..

Which is it? Or does it just come with different options?

Thanks.

Hi Shuko,

As far as the body wood goes, it is mainly correlated with the finish. Ash bodies usually have Premier Finishes whereas alder bodies usually Standard finishes.

The Legacy HSS comes standard with CLF-100 Alnico single coils in neck and middle position, AW4370 in bridge position but my guess is it can be specified with other pickup options as long as G&L is carrying them (or providing them as options) on other models. However, there is a previous incarnation of a Legacy with a single HB and 2 single-coils: the Legacy HB, which has exactly the other pickup configuration you point out, i.e. CLF-100 Alnico single coils in neck and middle position, Seymour Duncan TB-4 in bridge position, but seems to be discontinued and is no loner featured on the G&L website. So technically speaking, the one ad with the TB-4 should refer to the Legacy HB and the other with the AW4370 to Legacy HSS.

Hope this helps,

- Jos

Thank you Yowhatsshakin yes it does a bit..

I think my confusion is in me thinking the HSS

http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/US ... /index.asp

Is the same guitar as the HB..

http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/US ... /index.asp

I see the HB has quite a fatter neck too.. there's a 3 1/2 inch radius difference! And the HSS does not appear to be PLEK dressed according the the D&L site spec notes.

Thank you for the clarification.. The HB is the direction for me especially if there are neck size and profile options to be had, and a fast neck and locking tuners.

If I could get one of these in all black.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W7fDTNaBuE

Anyone know off hand the differences (apart from being 3 times the price) between the regular Legacy and the USA Legacy please?

The Legacy HB was renamed to Legacy HSS in July 1, 2015 and the standard specifications were changed. Reference: July 1, 2015-Feb 29, 2016 G&L U.S. Specifications & Options and 2014-15 (pre-July 1) G&L U.S. Specifications and Options.

The Legacy HSS current standard specifications (with a correction to the version G&L Humbucker model number used) can be found here: March 1, 2016-present G&L U.S. Specifications and Options.

There are various neck profiles and radius sizes which are options. Locking tuners are also optional. See the March 1, 2016-present G&L U.S. Specifications and Options for details.

All US G&L instruments have their necks PLEK'd since mid-2006. See: About non-compression truss rod and Plek and http://www.glguitars.com/features/neck.asp.

There are some options for the standard Alnico Humbuckers, too. See the March 1, 2016-present G&L U.S. Specifications and Options for details.

You might also want to check out our G&L Knowledgebase Forum for answers to other questions you might have and also use our Search function.
If you don't find answers there, don't hesitate to post further questions.

Hope this helps.

The regular Legacy is the same as the USA Legacy. But I think you are probably referring "regular Legacy" as being the "Tribute Series Legacy".
See: July 1, 2015-present Tribute Series Production Models..., What is the new Tribute series which G&L announced in 2003? and Why the change in manufacturing location for the Tributes?.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Craig your an ocean of knowledge.

USA it is then as basswood is for canoe paddles and dog kennels.. :lolno:

This is the one.. I can always slap a Seymour Duncan in the bridge and some Bill Laurences in middle and neck positions..

http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/US ... P-1200.jpg

Images won't display for me for some reason..

PS: Perhaps the G&L site needs site needs updating as the links to international dealers lead to many long defunct and non existent companies.. and guitar images are missing and specs out of date..

I contacted Dave McLaren (CEO) and let him know about the photos which weren't showing plus the typo in G&L Alnico humbucker pickups for the Legacy HSS, HH, Invader models and Fallout.
Dave was able to fix the photos and will have the typo fixed tomorrow.

Here is how to post the photo inline:

Keep in mind, USA built G&Ls are built to order. With very few excetions (some of the artist signiture models), there are not general factory spec models. There are base specs (which are actually pretty broad) that if you stay within them there are no up charges. Many you can get different fingerboard radius, nut widths, finishes, for reasonable up charges. Same with pickup substitutions, depending on the type there maybe substitutes available for some upcharge. The list of factory options availble on the USA guitar page.
