The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Bluesboy: Change neck pickup to an MFD?

Post by MaxTwang »

I've got a fairly recent USA ASAT Classic Bluesboy and am thinking of changing the neck pickup from the Seth Lover to an ASAT Classic MFD. Do y'all know if an MFD will fit with a standard ASAT Classic single coil pickguard without routing the body?

Why?

There is a lot more work involved than possibly having to route the body, which, I don't think you should have to do.

The ground works different on the BB, so I don't think you can just swap the pup in. Plus you need a new pg (small beer.)

Why not just find somebody to swap with? It would be a lot easier.

+1 to what Ed says.

Also, see: Install ASAT Classic MFD Neck In Blues Boy?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, was not aware of the wiring issues. Looks like the solution is a Bluesboy AND a 2 MFD ASAT Classic :D

That sounds like good solution.

Please do add your Bluesboy to our G&L Registry and we would love to see photos of it, too. :searching:

Agreed. A 2nd G&L, or 7th, is always the better way to go :)

So, is this ground plate issue only an issue with an alnico pickup in the bridge or is it also an issue with a MFD in the birdge? How about if one wanted to put a large MFD in the neck, like a Classic Custom? (so, that would be an ASAT classic MFD in the bridge and a large MFD in the neck)?

The ground issue has to do with the interaction between the Seth Lover & MFD bridge pup. About the Alnico, I don't know. About other neck pups or other MFD bridge pups, again I don't know.

The issue is when you have an Alnico pickup in the NECK position of any ASAT Classic Bluesboy model.
The currently AC Bluesboy models have a G&L Alnico humbucker neck pickup and the modified MFD bridge pickup.
The SD Seth Lover HB is now an option. And, the AC Bluesboy 90 models have a G&L P-90 neck pickup and the modified MFD bridge pickup.

If you want to convert any of the AC Bluesboy models to an ASAT Classic Custom (with the extra fat MFD Jumbo neck pickup), you would need
to either replace the modified AC bridge MFD pickup with a stock AC MFD bridge pickup or reverse the ground plate connection on the existing bridge MFD pickup.

Hope this helps.
