Roasted Maple Necks

Post by cbm »

During an online Q&A session last year, a G&L person that they were hoping to add roasted maple to the line as an optional neck wood. I wonder if anyone has heard anything about this actually happening?

I don't know, but they had a batch of roasted maple which they quarter sawn for the LE-2. Also put in a dual truss rod in these.

My understanding was that they had a hard time with it, said it was good for one offs but too much for a production run.

Maybe they are looking at it again, but didn't think so.

Agreed. I would love to be able to order a G&L w/ Roasted Maple. I currently have three G&Ls, and don't really need another, but I would jump on a fourth, if I could order it just how I want it.

I just came from the NAMM show. Me and some buddies where hanging out one evening and the Roasted Maple neck topic came up. One of them said it's supposed to sound better, but is much more brittle and prone to breaking. IMO, it'd have to sound more than a little better in order to offset the brittle/breakage issue. Just sayin' :-)

roasted maple necks are not yet a exact science .... it's still a trial and error , little tweaks here in there make improvement , everybody's oven's and processes are different ........ roasted not done right might be prone to cracking but don't think that's a universal problem with the companies that are " ahead of the game " in the development process , the process is supposed to make it more stable , same thing just like a vintage Martin didn't sound "vintage" when it was new , it got there with time , roasted maple helps get vintage sound from the beginning on acoustics ....... hope G&L doesn't give up on the process
