In most 3-pickup single coil guitars the middle pickup is reverse-wound so that it's hum-canceling in the 2 and 4 positions.
Is there a reason why the neck pickup on an 2-pickup ASAT or Tele couldn't be reverse-wound so that it would be hum canceling in the middle position?
Is that what gives the 2 and 4 positions their "quackiness"?

The ASAT and ASAT Special pickups are already that way, see: Album: ASAT Wiring Schematic (all years).themikeaustin wrote:In most 3-pickup single coil guitars the middle pickup is reverse-wound so that it's hum-canceling in the 2 and 4 positions.

No. The original strats did not have RWRP middle pickups, and those are the tones people are generally after. It just kills 60hz (50hz) hum

Thanks to both of you! You learn something every day...
I own two mid-90s ASAT Specials and didn't notice the hum-cancelling. Of course, the pickups are pretty quiet to begin with...
Thanks again!
