Is this a legit G&L George Fullerton and is it a good deal?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Is this a legit G&L George Fullerton and is it a good deal?

Post by milcs »

Hello everyone,

First post in these forums! I have been a Fender owner for a while and, after a frustrated transaction to get a Fender Eric Johnson Strat, I am now on the hunt for a G&L.
My guitar teacher is anti-Fender and he just owns G&Ls. He says that the ones from the 80s are amazing guitars and he keeps encouraging me to get one.
I have one in my mind at the moment. But because I know very little about these guitars and because I can't find an email from G&L guitars to ask about the specific guitar, I am reaching out to you guys.

So, I am giving you a link for an ad (in French) of a 80s G&L George Fullerton Signature (I think that's the model). Can you guys let me know if this the real deal and whether it is fairly priced or not? That would be really helpful!!!

Here is the link: https://www.zikinf.com/annonces/dispann ... ce=1338106

Cheers

Looks like a nice guitar. I don't think the George Fullerton model came into production until the mid 90's. This one had the 3 bolt neck, so it is likely from 1995-1997. I think I remember a nice example on EBay for $900 to $1000 a few months back. Yes, it looks like it is authentic G&L.

Thank you for your answer!
Indeed I might have made a mistake about the year of the guitar... In fact I maybe should have posted this in the General Forum.

The guitar does indeed looks nice. But 1250€ sounds a bit too step... Unless there is something special about the guitar! I guess that GF0188 doesn't really make it a rare guitar...

And then the seller uses lots of hyperbolic words: Customshop, quatersawn neck, etc...

All US G&L's are custom made to order, so it is not unusual to refer to them as custom shop. I found a recent example on EBay that sold for $1000 and there is currently one listed for $1100. So, I don't think the price is too far out of line. The one your looking at is an early example and many find the three bolts more desirable than the four bolt. It wouldn't be considered a rare bird, but the GF models is harder to find than a standard Legacy.

The guitar looks legit and a couple of remarks with it:
  1. Challenger is correct: the George Fullerton Signature was only introduced in 1995, so it is not a guitar from the '80s.
  2. It is not a Custom Shop model. The Customs Creations Department (CCD) was only founded in 1998. But then again, all G&Ls are custom shop ;-)
  3. As correctly pointed out above, given that this one has a 3-bolt neck attachment, it was built between 1995 and 1997 when G&L changed to a 4-bolt neck attachment.
  4. Get it while you can! These are some wonderful guitars. If you are familiar with the Legacy, you likely have to get used a bit to the tone controls. On the George Fullerton Signature no PTB is used but the one tone control is for the neck pickup and the other for the middle. The bridge pickup is not connected to a tone control at all. It is about the most traditional Strat you can get with the G&L brand name on it.
  5. Based on US prices, it should be around €1,000-1,050. Of course, US built instruments might be a little more expensive overseas.
  6. Originally it came with a copy of George's book “Guitars from George & Leo: How Leo Fender and I Built G&L Guitars”. It is unlikely this guitar comes with it but ask about it.
Hope this helps,

- Jos

Resale value of G&L guitars here in Europe is kinda low because it's a lesser known brand. I bought an ASAT Classic basically brand new from a dealer two years ago who intended to keep it for himself but then decided otherwise for just a little over 800 Euros. I just received this ASAT Deluxe from the States for less than 1100 Euros, an absolute beauty and mint:

I personally wouldn't pay more than 1000 Euros for it but then I don't need another strat type guitar since I have a commemorative S-500 from around 1992 which beats any other strat by miles (at least in my eyes :) )...

Zikinf ? Français ? ^^

i bought both my '93 asat and classic under 1000€... i trade a gibson '91 lite (value around 800€) for the classic and bought the 2nd hand asat 1000€ in a nederland store...

The first impression is that legacy is a bit pricey... but if it's a limited run maybe it's the good price... don't know...

Thank you so much for your replies! That is an enormous help...

I have to say that I wasn't originally going after the G&L. Although my guitar teacher swears by them and says that Fender is just but a big greedy company, as it was mentioned in the previous post, the resale value of G&Ls in Europe is quite low. And that sort of puts me off... Also, I was not really going for the Sunburst. In any case, I was sure that I would get myself a G&L (I love the lake placid blue that my guitar teacher owns) after I have dealt with my Fender Strats (I own a new Elite Strat and I want a red dakota Eric Johnson).

But given that this guitar seems in quite mint state and a seemingly new Eric Johnson turned out to be really bad setup, I decided to give it a try.
I have to say I think that the asking price seems quite high. I probably will manage to haggle it down to 1000€, but I am not entirely sure. Would that price be good? I feel it still would be too expensive... G&L Legacy seem to sell for 800€ and they are pretty much the same.

Anyway... I have another question for you experts. I have found another add for the same model: https://www.leboncoin.fr/instruments_de ... tm?ca=12_s

And this is the 1st guitar (on a different website): https://www.leboncoin.fr/instruments_de ... tm?ca=12_s

The new guitar is the 27th!!! But the electronics have probably been all swapped. What would you guys suggest I get between these two?

Cheers

Living in France... Not French! :)
Yeah... I think it is a bit pricey and I will only take it if I manage to get the guitars at 1000€. That is my limit, I think!
