Build a fleet with your top 3 G&Ls

Was thinking about this topic today. If you had to compile a fleet of just 3 G&L Guitars, what would you choose? Keeping in mind recording, playing shows, and everywhere in between. Can be tribute or USA models; whichever you have more experience with.

My fleet would consist of my semi hollow Bluesboy. Would use primarily for live shows and jamming. It's so light and is very easy to wield. Next would be a Comanche. Great for single coil tones and hum cancelling so could pile on the gain for heavier styles. Plus the PTB system is top notch. Great for shows or recording. Finally I'd go with an SC-2. Simple controls and sounds fantastic. Just a fun guitar to play.

My G&L fleet would be:

1. ASAT Special
2. S-500
3. ASAT Classic Bluesboy

I think I could cover pretty good coverage with those instruments.

I have an ASAT Special and S-500, both in the Tribute series. I really enjoy those guitars.

I'd pick three from my current herd:

1. '82 SC-2
2. '84 Cavalier
3. '90 ASAT III with HG and Skyhawk pickups

Between these I could get just about any tone I'd want.

For basses my picks would be:

1. '84 Interceptor Bass
2. '91 SB-2
3. '83 L-2000 fretless

On second thought, #2 would be a toss-up between the SB-2 and a maple-body '89 L-1000. I love the SB-2, but it's hard not to have an OMG switch somewhere on the list.

I might sub in my homebuilt SB-2, with G&L pups. It has a certain bottom end sound.....

My homemade testbed bass has become my daily player, it's heavy in the right places(walnut under the
bridge and neck pocket block) and light since it's just a board I made from an old pool table.
The pickup at the neck is so soulful sounding and with no tone or volume, it still has all the sparkle
a bass player needs. I did add a Jazz pickup close to the bridge to capture harmonics...but most bass lines are
just fine with just the neck.



If not that one maybe Jos would lend me his ASAT bass proto


Does this count as one or two?


I think I'd have to have an SC-3 around for strat tones...this one totally nailed the SRV vibe-

My choices, also from my own herd:

Guitars
1- "poor man's" Broadcaster aka black 1986 ASAT
2- early mahogany S-500
3- pre-BBE ASAT III with maple body

Basses
1- my fretless Wunkay
2- SB-2 (last version with split P-bass MFD)
3- L-2500

These would keep me happy throughout.

It's hard to just pick three, but I'll give it a go.

1. SC-2 hardtail. This one is easy. Love the big MFDs and the sleekness of the SC body.
2. ASAT Classic S with OLS body. Can still get those great ASAT Classic tone combinations and get some of the in between scooped tone of an S type.
3. GbL LE-2 adds a humbucker to the mix.

Still on my wish list for my more than three, would be to complete the MFD collection. So an F-100 and an ASAT Z-3. Who knows after playing thoses perhaps my top three would change????

Wow Elwood! Did you buy that doubleneck? I remember when that was for sale a year or so ago. I actually considered selling a whole bunch of gear to buy it, but decided against it. If you bought it, please start a thread on it with more pics. I always wondered how comfortable it was to play. I wondered if it would be more comfortable if the guitar and bass were reversed, like on the Rickenbacker doubleneck.... (sorry to hijack the thread).

Oh, and here's my three:

3. '82 S-500

In no particular order:

2004 ASAT Special HB. Hot wound pickup in the neck and all Mahogany not only delivers the tone but can get into some serious overdrive when needed.

Even have a backup...


My Candy Apple Red 1981 F-100. This thing exudes mojo and is just plain a blast to play. I can make space ship sounds with this thing or just nice tight jingly melodies. Plus you look good playing it!!



Finally, just because I now have one I feel comfortable playing, my Broadcaster 813. It has that old school maple body mojo but also is quite versatile in tone and drive. It would be my choice for recording if I did that anymore.



As runner up I would have to include my twin Invaders. If you ever played one you know why. If you haven't, you should. Just the color makes it sound better.

No, No. I realized after my post that it could be interpreted that way though, sorry for not being clearer.
I would if it was offered at maybe 1/3 the last asking price. I have thought about making one with G&L specs.

WitSok - I too have been contemplating competing the MFD collection, at least from a pickup configuration standpoint. Would also need an F-100 and a S-500 to round out the whole thing.

If it had to come from my current collection, the SC-2 would have to be replaced with my Tribute ASAT Special Deluxe. But I really like the SC body better, so someday hope to add an SC-2. LE-2 in LPB, ASAT Classic S in Margarita Mettallic, and the ASAT Special Deluxe. Sorry about the glare from the flash. If I have lights on the lights wash out the painted headstocks...

1. JB-5 -- I've been playing mostly bass for the past two years so this is my number one. I have not played one I haven't liked. I finally have one of my own coming hopefully this week or early next. These sound so crisp and full and clean and they just got the 5-string jazzer right. MY dad picked one up with a 8 lb empress body and daggone now... thats a bass folks!
2. ASAT Classic -- I have a 2015 Butterscotch. This is just a magical guitar. No other way to say it. The MFDs are so versatile. I wish I had got one of these a long time ago. Classic look and that is nice even though i like the bigger locking bridge/saddles.
3. ASAT Deluxe -- I have played many of these and this is next on my list. I have other dual hum guitars -- Les Paul Studio and a PRS CU22 so this is just more or less following that idea but different. Might look for one of the rarer G&Ls to fill this spot but not in a rush.

I'm primarily a bassist, and I have exactly three USA G&L's:

1. M-2500, Ruby Red Metallic, alder/rosewood. Ideally, my five would be an empress L-2500 for lighter weight and passive operation. I absolutely love the M though, and have no plans to replace it.
2. SB-2, Vintage White, alder/rosewood. Wonderful bass that's a total keeper, but I'd prefer an SB-1 with a maple board.
3. JB, Midnight Blue Metallic, painted headstock, alder/rosewood. Perfect as is.

I have three guitars, but only one is a G&L. My all-G&L lineup would be:

1. My Comanche, which is Sonic Blue/empress/rosewood.
2. Legacy HSS, which would replace my 2004 Am. Series Strat.
3. Fallout, which would replace my 2001 Am. Series HH hardtail Strat.

In my fleet I would pick my LE 2 , Fallout and SC2 ...... the most comfortable shape for me and light weight ...... if G&L made a current SC "3" with S 500 pups and a SC deluxe double SD humbucker I would order both right now ..... the "offset shape " is hands down my favorite

If I was going for versatility a Fallout , S 500 and my 1997 ASAT Deluxe would be my pick

.... If I had Jos collection , I would not be able to pick "just" three , lol
