I have one of the new Kiloton basses on order, but one of the unexpected things that piqued my interest in the video demo was the spilt coil option on the MFD. I was pleased with how nice the more transparent single coil sound was. I think I will wind up using this tone option quite a bit.
I would LOVE to have a spilt coil option on the L-2000/2500, but I suppose that would add even more complexity to the circuit, but man, would it add yet another level of versatility! Also, it would be excellent as an aftermarket preamp upgrade, as I have absolutely no desire to change my 1998 L-2500.
My question is, surely the Kiloton isn't the first G&L bass to offer the split coil MFD option, is it? Were there other models that had this? I don't see it as an option on any of the current models.

The L-1000 has the split coil option. It really gets a nice variety of sounds for just having one passive pickup.
The kiloton looks quite nice and the demo sounds great. Please give us a review when you get your bass.

Ah, I should have researched this years ago. It seems that it's possible to mod my L2500 to have spilt coil options, and there are lots of instructions on how to do so on the bass forums. I just may have to do this! I think I'd really like the extra option

Yes, it's possible to add a single coil setting to L-series basses, and it can be ordered from the factory at no charge. It's called "K-wiring." If I ever order an L-2500, I'll get it for sure.

The option name is now "Single Coil Mode (SCM)", see: March 1, 2016-present L-2000 / L-2500 Options.Nedmundo wrote:Yes, it's possible to add a single coil setting to L-series basses, and it can be ordered from the factory at no charge. Hope this helps.
