Please could someone tell me a little more about my guitar?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Please could someone tell me a little more about my guitar?

Post by WraithBringer »

Hi guys,

I usually play a Fender Jazz Bass but I saw this guitar and I just had to have it. I paid a fair price so I wanted to know a little more about the guitar I have purchased and I'm struggling finding out any information. I was really hoping some of you very knowledgeable people could put that knowledge to good use and tell me a little more about what it is that I have bought and essentially if I did get my months worth. I paid £400 for it which to be fair, is about what I would have paid for a Fender jazz bass from Mexico. The serial number is CLF24444 and here are some pictures for you.

Anything you could tell me would be great, I've searched G&L L2000 Cream/Creme and I can't really find anything. Thank you guys. Really appreciate it.

I'm not sure what prices are like in the UK, but converted into Aussie dollars thats a TOTAL bargain.

Unfortunately there's really not much to tell - its an American made G&L L-2000 in what I'm guessing is 'vintage white' finish. Body is almost certainly alder, rosewood fretboard, maple neck. If its the switches that you want to know about someone with first hand experience all be able to explain them if its not clear from the blurb on the website. The serial numbers don't give much away, but as a guess I'd say early '00s. There'll be a date stamp in the neck pocket so if you really want to know you'll have to remove it.

G&L basses are great instruments, enjoy it!

Looks to me like you got a good deal. Guitars and basses from G&L's USA factory are closer to Fender's Custom Shop offerings than to their production models.

The L-2000 is sort of an evolution of the classic Music Man Stingray bass, and it's designed to cover a lot of sonic territory in the bottom end. It features Leo Fender's Magnetic Field Design humbuckers, which are fantastic pickups.

From a fellow UK G&L lover:
I have to say you got a fantastic deal. Forget any Mexican comparisons!
And your bass looks great too. :luv:

Welcome. You got a killer deal on that L-2000. My best advice would be not to get too wrapped up in the description of the controls. Everything is very interactive, so try every combination you can think of and find what works well for you. Also, keep in mind that the knobs on an L-2K function differently than what you might be used to from Fenders. I'd start with all three knobs turned about halfway up, try the different switch combinations, and then start experimenting with the knobs.

These basses also sound quite different based on the string set. If you don't find a tone that thrills you, I'd look at changing strings as a next step.

Thanks for the responses guys, I'm feeling much more confident about my purchase now. I'm getting some really good low tones through my Marshall amp and the ping of the string playing slap bass is very satisfying. I think if anything I was concerned about the potential of buying a replica or fake because I bought it through a 'business' on eBay. Quite often they'll try and pull the wool over your eyes and sell you a dud but the responses are really positive. I imagine people such as yourselves would have spotted something like that a mile off.
