My ASATs - Better pictures. Now with sound clip!
I got a new camera recently and took some new pictures of my guitars for everyone to drool over. Enjoy!
My '07 Classic S
My custom ordered Bluesboy semi-hollow
And finally, my '97 Classic. This one's getting some mods in the next week or two - I'll post new pics and maybe even a sound clip when its all done. It's such a nice guitar, very lightweight - I don't have an accurate scales but it weighs less than the semi-hollow Bluesboy!!! I want to get a few more ASATs from the '90s now

Haha - thanks StratsRock! I'm a big fan too. My Bluesboy also has the GOT neck but it's much lighter which is a good thing with the copper finish. They must have made a conscious decision in the factroy.
I've just finished the mods to the white Classic (Belle is her name ), it sounds great. I'd be playing it now but my dad (who's tools I used to carry out the work) has called 'MY TURN'! I can't blame him! I'll get some pictures tomorrow as well as the details of the modifications

Here's my freshly modded ASAT
Thats a Glendale bridge and saddles, Don Mare Don-O-Caster pickups and Sperzel locking tuners. Needless to say it sounds different than before. A slightly more vintage vibe. I'll say this though - the stock G&L pickups are every bit as good as the DM's. Different, yes, but damn good. I'm lucky I have enough ASAT's to have one with each!

Bridges looks a bit flimsy for my taste, never liked 3 barrels and whatnot though. Sperzels are something I do not do without however, Locking tuners are the way to go. Time saved tuning and stringing is huge. Cannot comment on the pickups.

Blarg: nice work. Does that ashtray have a cover too? I have a blond, but it is a thinner coat and has aged to a yellower hue.

Hi Jim! Nice to identify you here as well as over at TDPRI
Here's an update of how it looks now, sans pickguard and tough as old boots
I gigged with it last night and it was fantastic. The pickups really do sound great.
They're actually not flimsy at all and the saddles have both perfect intonation and string spacing which really surprised me. They're very well designed and I'd recommend them any day over standard, non-compensated saddles. I prefer them to the stock aluminium ones which I found much too bright for my taste.sirmyghin wrote:Bridges looks a bit flimsy for my taste, never liked 3 barrels and whatnot though. No, there's no ashtray cover, though it would look great on it. I love the natural aged look of the neck, do you have pics of yours replyman? I'd like to see what I can expect in a couple of yearsreplyman wrote:Blarg: nice work. Does that ashtray have a cover too? I have a blond, but it is a thinner coat and has aged to a yellower hue.

Re: My ASATs - Better pictures
I don't know, Blarg....while the guitar looks kind of cool and in a rather raw state without the pickguard, I tend to think it looks a little more complete with it on. I guess that's just me. Perhaps if I didn't see the screw holes, I'd feel differently, for I've always liked the look without a guard!
BTW, what kind of a band do you play in? Style of music? Just curious! This is the first weekend I've had off in a couple of months now, so it feels a little strange to be hanging out online on a Saturday night.

Re: My ASATs - Better pictures
Hey Jim
I'm loving the look of it without the pick guard, in fact I'm going to do the same to my Bluesboy this afternoon. I agree with you on the screw holes though, it'd be nice if they weren't there.
I know exactly how you feel -I don't know what to do if I have a satuday night off these days! I'm playing in a soul band, we do a lot of fairly obscure songs from the '60s, mainly in the northern soul vein, plus a few blues numbers (early Ray Charles and Etta James style blues). It's damn good fun. I'm jamming with a couple of country bands too, but it's taking a long time to get it all off the ground - everyone is busy etc, I'm sure you know how that story goes. How about you? What sort of music are you playing?

Well, it looks as though a lot of folks love the pickguard off, even over at the TDPRI. I guess I'm outnumbered....LOL.blargfromouterspace wrote:Hey Jim

I actually play many of the same styles of music you're playing, and yeah, even some country on occasion, too. My primary band is more of a blues group, but we do some R&B and a touch of jazz as well. It's called "Otis & the Alligators." If you "google the name, you'll find us all over the place. I'm also playing in two other bands; one is another blues band, and the other is a jazz fusion group I play with on occasion. I'm normally an architect by trade, but with the economy as it's been, I've resorted to playing music much more within the last three years or so. However, I did manage to find some work the last few months, and with gigs being booked before then, I've been literally swamped. Although, things will lighten up in a few weeks. How about you? What sort of music are you playing?

Every cloud has a silver lining I hope things come good for you professionally. I took the economic slump as a cue to get out of the manual labour jobs I'd been doing since high school and get a degree. I'm now half way through an Electrical Engineering course and can't wait to finishJim P wrote: I'm normally an architect by trade, but with the economy as it's been, I've resorted to playing music much more within the last three years or so. Checked out you bands myspace page - nice playing there Jim. My band doesn't currently have any stuff recorded, I'll be sure to get a link up somewhere when we do.

Re: My ASATs - Better pictures
Thanks, Blarg! This coming fall the band is hoping to do our first studio CD in more than 10 years. It's been a long time coming, but the majority of songs will be our own material, and most of it is a very refreshing change from what we've been doing. It's probably a little more funk and jazz oriented, but that's ok. Maybe we're just getting a little older while wanting to tame things down a bit......LOL.
And hey, congrats on going for your degree! You won't regret it! I played professionally for about 15 years until I realized that I needed to support my kids through college. Still, I had to play regularly another five or six years just to get through college myself. I finally obtained my architectural degree in 1992, and until our latest economic downfall, I've never regretted it. I still will never regret it. Even though I haven't been working as much as I'd like to be, I'm thankful to have music to fall back on. And yeah, life does indeed seem to have a "sliver lining" when things are looking down, but I've also had a very supportive wife of 35 years, too, so that really helps. Those of us who've been married for a long time while playing music all along the way, certainly appreciate everything they've done for us.

Re: My ASATs - Better pictures
Actually Jim, it was a conversation with an architect friend of mine that made me decide to go to university - you architects are a good bunch of people, or so it seems to me! It's great to have something as fun a music to fall back on, I envy you. I really wish I could support myself through music but it's just not going to happen here - at least not with the kind of music I want to play and where I live. Don't get me wrong, I have no intention of quitting music - EVER. I get such a kick out of being on stage, way better than playing sports or something
I look forward to hearing your album - if the playing on it is anywhere near as good as it is on the live recordings on your myspace page it'll be great! Put my name down for a copy!

Here's a clip of the modded ASAT. Just a quick blues improvisation was all i had time for tonight.

It's mostly in the middle position, with the bridge pickup by itself at the end.

Semi hollow, NO F-HOLE!!!!!! It's optional to have an f-hole on G&Ls. IMO the f-hole they use is too small and looks out of proportion with the rest of the guitar. If you look at a Fender thinline you'll notice that the f-hole intrudes to where the pickguard would be, and requires a different shape so as not to overlap it:
whereas on a G&L they put the f-hole in the dryer and keep the original pick guard shape:
I don't think the presence of an f-hole has any effect on the amplified sound of the guitar. I made my decision based purely on aesthetics.

G&L is my favorite guitar without question but if I'm honest, I dont always love some of the finishes. But those are 3 of the pretties guitars I have seen. I would fight you for that first Classic S.
Well, not really cause your probably a great guy but you know what I mean. That is freaking beautiful.
