The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

G&L/Schaller Locking Tuners

Post by dalto »

I had a quick question for the G&L experts here.

Other than the obvious cosmetic differences are there any notable differences between normal one-pin Schaller Locking tuners and the G&L Locking Tuners?

See this post in our Knowledgebase: What tuners are used on G&L guitars (USA models)?

Thanks!

I read that earlier and the stuff from the store page. I believe from reading those pages that I could use either Schaller M6 1-pin locking tuners or the G&L locking tuners.

What I was wondering if anyone had any advice on is if there is a quality or functionality difference between the Schaller branded tuners and the G&L branded tuners.

Also, welcome back :)

Here's another post to check out: Locking tuners question.

And, thanks for the welcome back, had a great time with the family, including our newest grandchild, Abby. We left Chicago just in time, too.

I actually end up getting some of both to try them out and thought I would post back my initial findings in case anyone else had the same question.

Both sets of locking tuners work well, were drop in replacements and make string changes quick and easy.

The primary differences are:
  • The Schaller tuners are staggered with two heights, the G&L tuners are all a single height
  • The G&L tuners allow the wheel that unlocks the string to be completely unscrewed and removed, the wheels on the Schaller tuners do not come free
  • The G&L tuners have the G&L logo and the Schaller tuners are unbranded
