The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Need help, brand new US Legacy buzzing right out of the box

Post by kracken »

Newbie here,
Is this normal and what would it take to fix this?
Is it to be expected that the truss rod and/or saddles need to be adjusted off the bat when new?
I'm Leary letting guitar center touch it, where I purchased it on clearance, after they said it comes stock with .009 gauge strings (found out later this is False), they also wanted to mess with the nut- I said no.
After looking at G & L website dealers, guitar center doesn't even show up for San Antonio.
Feeling like I should have passed on buying but always wanted a legacy and the honey burst wood finish offered at a great price is what sold me. I figured This stuff is minor but now I'm wondering & contemplating just returning it which I really don't want to do...
Advice?
Thanks in advance folks

Hi Kracken,

First of all, some GCs seem to be selling Tributes, not USA, G&Ls. As legit dealers.

Second, assuming it's new, then it should have come with 10s, not 9s.

Third, any new guitar is going to need some adjustment, pretty much regardless of where you buy it. And you are right to be suspicious of taking it to GC for a tuneup. I assume that you have a competent luthier near you. Take it there, and have them do it up for you.

And welcome to the family.

Like Ed said, if it is a new Legacy it should have 10s on it. I would start by putting the correct strings on it and see what happens. Likely it wasn't set up properly for 9s so the greater tension might resolve your buzz. New USA Legacys are PLEK'd at the factory, so it seems unlikely it would have fret issues. I recently bought a Tribute ASAT Junior II that buzzed in the lower frets. The nut was cut wrong at the factory in Indonesia and the frets weren't properly leveled. My luthier fixed it up and now it plays great. After the repairs it wasn't as great a deal but I really like the guitar. I could have pursued a warranty claim but it wasn't worth the trouble to me. I would not let Guitar Center work on it, but you should be able to find a good luthier near you and if it is new, G&L should be able to handle it as a warranty claim.

Thx a bunch guys. It actually came with .010 strings but they thought it came with .009 which is why they tossed a set in when I bought it.
Finding a competent tech for a g & l may be a challenge but I will pound the pavement doing so. Don't want to hire a hack.
I'd rather be focusing on practicing instead of this but oh well... Frustrating

Where on the neck is it buzzing, and under what conditions? Working on the G&L Legacy should be no different than a Fender or any other solid body electric guitar. The vibrato is different, but here is plenty of setup information to be found if necessary. If you have a Guitar Center near you, you probably live in a place where other luthier services can be found. Try contacting other players in your area to see what they do. Check Yelp for your area.

Thanks,
Strings 1,2,3 & 6 with chords or single notes up & down neck, bends too.. Not terrible buzz but still there. Less noticeable by the nut. Built 7/15 so she's been through who knows what since being shipped. Got a great clearance price in perfect condition appearance wise.
I do Know of a good local guy I've used b4 for my jap strat but a bit pricey at $75. He has over 25 years of experience on the bench. I'll look around but will probably go with him.

Called G & L today as well. It was reassuring to hear them say they will replace anything necessary if found defective while being set up by a local professional. Keep y'all posted. Thx for your thoughts....
