The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.
After getting some friendly advice from the users of this forum I have bought my first G&L guitar. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) this is a 1997 custom ASAT special. Craig helped me to check the serial no. with G&L and the response was...
CL03737 completed on September 23, 1997 shows as ASAT Black RW 2 HUM BLK HW. That’s what the pic shows: an ASAT with two humbuckers, black hardware, rosewood board.
I collected the guitar a few days ago. The story is that it has not been played for a very long and lived undisturbed in it's case. The frets needed a polish but apart from that I was really happy with how mint condition the guitar is. No blemishes anywhere on the finish. I took it straight to a guitar tech who gave it a setup (action, intonation etc), looked at all the electrics and tidied a few overlong wires and then polished the frets for me. He really liked the guitar too.
Here are some images, let me know if there are any bits I've not shown that you'd like to see. I should have dusted it before taking pics but was short of time this morning

No push pull switch on the tone or vol knobs. I looked for this because what got me into g&l guitars is the fallout model which of course splits the bridge pickup from the tone knob. In truth I'll probably sell this guitar on to get one.
If I decide to sell this, so I can get my much desired Fallout can anyone advise me about describing it in a sale ad. I don't want to accidentally say anything that is untrue or misleading, equally I wouldn't want to undersell it. For example is the description Custom ASAT Special 1997 correct or should it be "Custom Shop" or "Prototype" or "one-off". Im not sure how to accurately describe what it is.
Also apart from rosewoord fingerboard and black hardware I haven't a clue what other woods might have been used or type of bridge or pickups
My floorboards are not for sale!
I've also just added this instrument to the registry, I think the entry could do with some scrutiny and editing as I may not have described it as well as some of you more experienced members could
How does it play? If you like everything about it, including the tone, you can always have someone throw a push-pull splitter in there for you. Not too hard to do. Or a mini toggle but push-pull would be my first choice and keep the original pot.
Of course, the Fallouts are nice but that is a cool looking guitar you found!
It is very nice to play, it's the first guitar I've taken to have a proper set up done and the action is really better than anything I've had before. It sounds great too, though I don't have a nice tube amp to try it through. The neck is great, I guess it's some kind of satin finish, very silky. The thing is it's probably a better guitar than I need, I don't play all that often and was thinking of getting a cheap and cheerful Tribute Fallout. I'm 50/50, as you say if I sell this I'm not going to find a another like it. Im no collector and certainly don't need two guitars
I really like your guitar. Just pick it up and play it more. Think long and hard about selling it. Just remember that you will be able to pick up a Fallout ( Tribute or USA ) all day and everyday . As Fianoman pointed out, a push pull is very easily installed and will make it even better. I can't think of a cooler guitar to have if you just need one. Keep it !
