Lefty ASAT Special
Hey everyone, this is my first foray into G&L as you've heard lefty's can be a bit of a hunt
please feel free to comment as this one seems fairly rare ...

Re: Lefty ASAT Special
Howdy! Sweet Asat you have there. Not sure how rare but definitely a nice example of a mid 90's ASAT (Special) and yes Lefties in general are harder to come by. I would say yours has a premium finish… judging from the grain pattern it most likely lightweight and has an ash body. Tasty dark rosewood fingerboard too. Your ASAT has many of the Leo-era appointments - knobs, logo and string string + earlier model Saddle lock bridge and longer control plate (they changed a bit later to have pointier edges and not as nice chrome plating. The control plate shortened in length a bit later. By late '97 BBE did away with the 3 bolt neck design which they argued folks didn't like but also it meant they could save costs by streamlining production by doing away powder coating the neck plate & less tooling/parts in the neck & pocket. Few years after that the bicut neck design bit the dust too and they changed the headstock to an uglier stretched out look… I'll stop there... (I'm not a fan of BBE's later manoeuvres - questionable whether Leo would be too) Anyway congrats on your acquisition!
Cheers,
KF

My, also lefty, ASAT Special from the same era. It's also a 3 bolt version with factory fitted Sperzels.
Don't know what the finish is, it looks like rhubarb and custard.
btw ... your ASAT Special probably won't be your last G&L

That cherryburst ASATspecial is almost perfect, something about the white pickguard, I'd like to change it

Re: Lefty ASAT Special
You're welcome - glad to help
Re swapping out the p/g - there used to be a forum member here who made aftermarket ASAT p/g to original specs…. Leo-era & BBE - that's another thing that changed over the years…
Chandler at some point was the supplier for BBE-era models but specs kinda drifted and once the 3-bolt to 4-bolt shift occurred the neck pocket / p/g thang really changed.
I think the forum member might be Thumbs but other folks here might chime in should they know.
Cheers,
KF

Well the one thing you may find relief because I doubt SouthpawGuy's or my ASAT's would be easily found ... judging from the register. I realize it's just a sample but these combos even in righty seem few...Nubs wrote:Stop giving me GAS already dammit!!
... and I'm sure you're still getting a ton of fun outta that Custom beaut !

Yes I am, but I'm always looking out for more ASATs. I'd love to have the whole lefty collection eventually.AllroyPA wrote:Well the one thing you may find relief because I doubt SouthpawGuy's or my ASAT's would be easily found ... judging from the register. Very nice Looking instruments there guys, and both just beautiful as they are... But on the subject of the pickguards (and just my 2c) i think that you guys should swap guards, i think the pearl guard would look brilliant on the cherryburst and the white guard would allow the more subtle blonde to show off its grain a little more... But as i said beautiful just as they are.

I saw a Cherryburst ASAT Special with white pickguard and black MFD pickup covers. It was beautiful. If you're looking to change something you might try that before a pickguard change out.

We are talking about southpawguy's guitar and I'm sure he's cool with us dreaming on it ... I don't know if I'd like my cream-pearl on his, but if it was just a white-pearl I think that might look tough ... I also once ran into a mint-pearloid on a friend's tele that was pretty nice on a red'ish sunburst

Re: Lefty ASAT Special
I have four other cherry bursts, a Legacy, an S500 Deluxe, a Bluesboy and a Legacy Special ... they are all the same colour as each other on the body edges, or rim. This ASAT is way different, it is a deep maroon or plum finish.Craig wrote:That's Cherryburst on Swamp Ash.SouthpawGuy wrote:My, also lefty, ASAT Special from the same era. Dreaming of pickguard colour schemes is just the start. Soon you'll be thinking of adding a Legacy, or a Bluesboy, ...maybe an S500

Re: Lefty ASAT Special
The only other standard burst finish that it could be is Tobacco Sunburst. I found the G&L Catalog for 1996-97 in our Gallery and here's a link to the Color chart. What do you think?SouthpawGuy wrote:I have four other cherry bursts, a Legacy, an S500 Deluxe, a Bluesboy and a Legacy Special ... they are all the same colour as each other on the body edges, or rim. BTW, this sunburst finish is now known as "Old School Tobacco Sunburst".
Hope this helps.

SouthpawGuy speaks the truth when he says " Dipping your toes into G&L water can be a dangerous pastime.

I started with an ASAT Special, then came a Legacy and now i have an ASAT Classic that i am in the process of paying off... Thats the thing about G&Ls they really do tend to accumulate,
Loving this Lefty ASAT thread too
