ASAT Classic custom neck Pickup on ASAT Special

Post by Ahryn »

Been a long time but I had a late night burst of inspiration/madness
What if you put an ASAT Classic Custom neck Pickup in my ASAT Special Deluxe?

Now, you might wonder why you one would even consider such madness?
well a few years back I had my ASAT wired like an old Broadcaster, you know with the blend.
well one of the things that works well with that sort of wiring is the middle position which is just the neck pickup wired to the volume pot essentially
this is kind of a thinner sound that works well with the old dark broadcaster neck pickup, but on the G&L it can be really trebly almost like the bridge position on a traditional Tele
but I'm a curious sort, and I wonder how it would work.

I mostly (almost entirely) use it in the first position with the blend but I'm curious as to what this esteemed and venerable board may think of such a thing.

I blame it all on finding this http://g-l-online-store.myshopify.com/c ... -pickup-ii on the G&L store.

Not sure I understand ... the neck pickup on the ASAT Classic Custom was custom wound for that model, and I believe it was also physically deeper / taller than a regular ASAT Special neck pickup. It may not fit in the neck position of an ASAT Special Deluxe, it might require some routing, and because the Special Deluxe has no pickguard any extra routing may be obvious. The neck pickup on an ASAT Classic Custom sounds phatter than phat, the phattest sounding single coil I've played.

gratuitous shot of my own ...

Thanks for the info guys, come the morn all thoughts of messing with my beauteous tone fiend died
my thinking being, aside from the routing a super phat pickup would change the dynamics too much of my beloved blend setting
even if it would phatten the the neck to the extreme :D

Happy Picking guys and gals.
