Adding push/pull coil tap to a Fallout?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Adding push/pull coil tap to a Fallout?

Post by AndersM »

Hi,

I bought a second hand USA Fallout in very good condition.
However it didn't have the push/pull coil tap, which I assumed all Fallouts had. I asked the seller and he said it had been a custom order done by the store he bought it from. It is also a sunburst with a tortoise pickguard that I haven't seen on a fallout before.

Is it a big job to add the push/pull feature and wire it like a standard Fallout?

Thanks!

I think the early ones didn't have it yet , never done it but I believe it's somewhat easy to add a push/pull if you have a soldering iron

You're entirely replacing the tone pot and will have to disconnect and reconnect everything to the new pot in addition to wiring the switch located on the pot, so about a dozen new solder points. If you're not comfortable with an iron in tight spots or don't have a good iron, have a tech do it. Buy the pot from the G&L store so you can be sure the shaft fits both the guitar and the tone knob without modification. Before you buy the pot, make sure that there are 4 leads coming from the bridge pickup instead of 2 (sometimes 2 conductor pickups are used if the pickup isn't going to be split). The good news is any guitar wired to a pick guard makes wiring a lot, lot easier.

See the Gallery (Album: Instrument Manuals and Wiring Schematics). There are wiring diagrams for both the US Fallout and the Tribute Fallout.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot guys! Good, helpful info.
I think I'll have someone else do it for me if I decide to get it done.
