Neck and frets - variation in build and quality?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Neck and frets - variation in build and quality?

Post by danglam »

Hi,

There 2 things that concern be about my new USA Legacy:

1. It looks like the distance from the body to the fretboard is a little too high; sort of like the neck is positioned too high (it's a #3 neck).
2. The fret ends look like they are filed at a pretty obtuse angle, resulting in an effectively smaller frets length and causing string fall-off.

you can see the images below.

Since I'm not sure that there's anything wrong, and I know that maybe I only need some time to get used to my new guitar, my questions are:

Is this the way this kind of neck sits on all Legacies? Would it look the same with a #1 neck?
Is this the way the frets are filed on all Legacies with this kind of neck (and regular medium jumbo frets)?
Could it be that my own particular guitar just happened to come out like this?

Thanks!

All the G&L I have seen include my own 3, has the neck a little higher then the Fenders.
Yours look perfectly normal to me. So do the frets, maybe a tad close but I have seen a
lot worse. I hava a Fender telebration old growth which I believe is closer. I have no problem
with it.

It's always hard to tell from photos, so I might be wrong about this.
But I can't help thinking, particularly looking at your first pic from your first post about wider necks, that your neck has moved a bit in the pocket, so that all the strings are offset to the treble side.
If so, it's not a problem, and something that can happen to any bolt-on neck, even with the nice close-fitting pockets that G&L make. Any large jolt in transit can do it.
And it's something that any decent tech can correct very quickly and easily.

You don't need a tech to fix this. You can do this in the comfort of your home by following this post located in our G&L Knowledgebase,
G&L Technical Questions & Tips sub-forum: String alignment issues and a simple cure.

Hope this helps.
