After market pups in a USA pickguard

Post by CRAIG4FSU »

Hi all,

I understand that MFD pups are bigger than after market pups. Lollar, Fralin, Fender, etc. I want to try some different pups in my two USA S500's and I'm considering two options.

1: Ordering a couple of Legacy pickguards from PGHeaven and loading them with my other pups to just swap PG's when i want to or,,,,,,,

2: Loading the pups i bought into my existing PG's IF the screw holes will line up.

Finally, the point. Anyone ever try to screw in a after market pup into a G&L PG? Pickguard heaven isn't exactly cheap so i'm looking at all options.

The holes should line up just fine. I dropped S-500 MFD's in a Fender with no problems. I have a picture somewhere that shows an MFD compared to a vintage Strat pickup. If I can find it, I'll post it.

Found the picture. As you can see, mounting dimensions are the same, but the depth is different.

Hey Ches,

Thanks a lot for the info. I think I'll save the $ and just swap pups.

Thanks again.

No problem. Glad I could find the picture.

That was put together by Gabe, back in the old GbL days. I'm glad I kept it!

Where is Gabe these days? Guy was something of a fountain, knowledge-wise.

I think Gabe forgot more than most guys will ever know about G&L. I believe he was writing a book with GGJaguar. I think I'll get in touch with Greg to see if he knows what's up with Gabe.

I heard back from Greg and here's the update:

He said Gabe is still around and is as busy as ever - lots of projects. The book is a slow go due to other distractions and because they keep finding more and more stuff about CLF and G&L. In the meantime they hope to keep G&L fans happy with some articles. They had one on the S-500 published a year or so ago in VG and hope to have another published in 2016.

There you go...........Keep an eye out for those articles!
