Back in the fold....

Hi GbL'ers. It's been a while since I was active on the forum, but I recently picked up this Bluesboy and felt the need to register it and show it off! I had no intention of buying a T-style guitar that day - primarily because despite owning a pile of them, I never kept one for very long. I was a S-type guy, and that's what I was searching for. I swear I played just about every American Standard and American Deluxe Strat in southeast Michigan. None rang my bell. I was in a Guitar Center and the sales guy asked if I'd be interested in an American Deluxe Tele. He pointed at the row of guitars hanging 25 feet in the air. I wasn't interested, till I saw the orange finish. I knew it was a G&L without seeing the headstock, so I asked him to pull it down.

The Modern Classic neck felt very familiar - very comfortable to play, and the Plek job is remarkable. The ash body was dense, so it rang with a nice presence and sustained forever. I kept telling myself to put it back, but it was coming home. Since then, I've tried everything to talk myself out of keeping this guitar, but all I have to do is plug it in to remind me why it came home in the first place. Nice job, G&L. This one is really something special.

I've long since lost my GAS--haven't bought a guitar since I got my SC-2 reissue back in 2009. I still have all my G&Ls though, and gig with the '98 ASAT Special the most.

Anyway, good to see you post here. Not too many "old timers" around these days. I mostly lurk.

All is well here. I tried to retire last year, but they talked me into working part time as a contract employee. Kind of nice - I work when I want to, and I knock off when I feel like it. No pressure. The band stopped gigging last year, so I broomed almost everything - the PA, several amps, and most of my guitars. Feels good. A couple of us are recording for our own amusement, but that's about it on the music front.

Are the Mad Maggie's still together? Did you two move to Canada? (Just noticed you're in Montreal. I guess you did move!)

Yes, we moved to Montreal almost exactly 2 years ago. Love it here! Love living in Canada! Montreal is a great city!! No regrets.

And yes, the band is still together, though we gig a lot less. We've been doing clusters of gigs and small tours since we moved--usually over a two week period of time. The next project will be a series of recordings with each band member being responsible for their own tracks. Everyone's game so it should be interesting.

I order to stay in shape and keep up my Stratogenarian image, I took up longboard skateboarding this year. Broke my nose and cracked a rib the first time out, but once I healed up a bit, I started cruising and carving every dry day. Fun! And yes, I've fallen since that first day but that just comes with the sport (helmet and wrist guards are a must!). Crazy fool that I am, I like being the only 60+ year old sk8er around. I know there are others out there in world, but I've yet to see a geezer pushing a board here in Montreal.

Ches, long time no hear! Glad to see you around again. Nice G&L you picked up there. I am retired now. My hobby band, though still a hobby band, has been hired to gig a few times now. We already have a couple of gigs lined up in December and January. We don't really look to gig much, a gig a month sounds decent to us.

GDub, kilt on a longboard! That's the ticket.

I wouldn't mind gigging once per month, Kit, especially if it's at one of those bars that close by midnight! We had a fairly regular gig from 8:00-11:30 at a small bar/restaurant. I LOVED that gig, till the place went out of business.....probably because they closed by midnight!

I have no excuses, Colin, other than not owning a G&L! My son has two, though!

You know, it occurs to me that I've never touched/seen in person a G&L newer than the three bolt era. Sure seen some tasty ones 'round here, though! Always liked the look of those Bluesboys, though.

New G&L's have always been a bit scarce around here, so I was surprised to find this one at a Guitar Center, of all places. I'm really digging this Modern Classic neck. Feels perfect to me. If they ever come out with a soft V with a 1-11/16" nut and a 9.5" radius, I don't think I could keep my credit card holstered. Perhaps Darth will put one on a Legacy/S-500 and send it out for a field test!

The last year we gigged, most gigs were about 90 miles from my house. Finishing at 1:00, loading out till 2:00, then driving 90 miles was not the highlight of the evening. I do miss playing, though.

Its good to hear from you and Gdub and all of the others from the olden days here at G&LDP.

We had a guy sit in with our band and he played a G&L ASAT just like the one you bought.
It and he sounded great.

I am considering retirement also but my band is in high gear. We have a regular club gig every Monday night at a place in Alexandria, VA. We play 9-12 and its only 40 minutes from my house in good traffic.
Its been fun to play a lot and we are coming up to two years of Mondays next week!

The only downside is that it is a cigar bar and we have to breathe.

The ASAT is a keeper. I took the plastic off the pickguard and put on strap locks, so it's official. Can't put the darn thing down!

Retirement would be great if you have things to do, and it sounds like the band will keep you busy. 9-12 is perfect! Hold your breath and rock out!

It's nice to be back, and great to see all the familiar faces. This Bluesboy drew me right back in, and like you guys, I really dig the color, too. Those big frets and the new neck are calling my name!
