Hi everyone,
This year I got my first G&L, it is a nice ASAT Special Tribute, and though it is not a USA model, my mind is blown away!
Now I am thinking of buying an USA one, and I was wondering how big is the difference between Special/Classic/Classic Costume with MFD pups?
I guess here are some of you guys who have two ore more ASAT-s, so can you tell me why do you have more than one
thanks!

Re: Two ore more asat-s
The ASAT Classic Custom has been discontinued in favour of models with a P90 in the neck. There is a fairly big difference between an ASAT Classic and an ASAT Special. The pickups in the Special have more of everything, in a good way. If I were to choose one I'd probably go for a Classic as it is much easier to find aftermarket pickups should the stock ones not be to taste. That probably sounds like sacrilege to die hard G&L guys, but there is a reason why G&L have introduced alnico and P90 versions of the ASAT .. lots of players like to tinker or mod their guitars, and pickups are very often first on that list.
Having said that I have three ASAT Specials and I've toyed with replacing the pickups on at least one, but they are all still stock. Nothing else sounds like those big MFDs.

ASAT Classic Custom ( newer model )
ASAT Classic Custom ( older model )
The newer ASAT Classic Custom has ( had ) a neck MFD that sounds fatter than fat, fatter than any single coil I've played. The bridge pickup is wound to match the neck pickup so it is not the same as a regular ASAT Classic bridge pickup.
The older ASAT Classic Custom pictured, late '90s, was basically the same as a current ASAT Classic but with alder body /ash top, natural binding on the top and a belly cut. I had that one modded with a Wilde L200TL in the bridge and a Fender Vintage Noiseless in the neck.
And don't forget the Bluesboy .... this one now has a Fender Vintage Noiseless in the bridge.
.
Why more than one ?
For the same reason there are lots of different flavours of ice cream of course

Re: Two ore more asat-s
but is tone-vise this difference that big that you would call it a different guitar, not just a different vanilla
for example, is there a real difference between neck pup in the Classic Custom and ASAT Special?
Niiiiiiice guitars!!!!!

So this post got me thinking about ASAT Specials (never had them on the "want" list before). After listening to the various demos and researching them, I now want one - thanks Southpaw In particular, I want one like this one that sold from Upfront...love the double bound body, bound neck, and rosewood fingerboardSouthpawGuy wrote:The ASAT Classic Custom has been discontinued in favour of models with a P90 in the neck. Yes - very tempting to do a build just like it....darwinohm wrote:Wow! the one at Upfront is sweet! SPG's are also as good as they get!-- Darwin
