What amp(s) are you using?

Carvin V16. My brother is the singer rhythm player in my band. He got so tired of all the tone compliments I was getting he ordered a Carvin Nomad. Both our amps are from the vintage series. We both have Mesa Boogies. I already sold my boogie and he has put his in the paper for sale. We both have other amps.
But the Carvin vintage series gives us both the best tone on stage we have ever had. We play 70's rock style and raunchy blues. Had we both known Carvin would become our favorite amps we both could have saved a fortune over the years. I still love vintage amps but I don't like to gig with them anymore.

Carvin has a 10 day return if you don't like it ..... I could see getting a Belair Green VT16 in the future

I'm a bit late to the party. I usually rotate between a '65 Princeton (non-reverb), a '68 Vibro Champ, and a mid-'70s Champ. If I needed a lot of volume, I would go to a '68 Super Reverb. All of them sound great with MFDs, but I have to admit that the Champ sounds the best overall to my ears. I go to the others when I want a particular flavor of tremolo, as they each have a different circuit.

For the basses, I'm completely set with an early Ampeg B-15N and an '82 Fender Bassman Ten. If it weren't for emotional attachment to the Bassman Ten, I could let the B-15N take care of all my low-end needs.

I forgot to mention my old Roland JC-120. I don't use much in the way of effects these days (other than the occasional boost pedal), but when I did use effects the JC-120 was the perfect amp. Large MFDs were unbearably shrill if I plugged straight in, but it actually sounded decent with smaller MFDs.

I currently use a Koch Multitone 100 2x12 combo and a mid 90's Ampeg Reverberocket 50 watt half stack. Recently missed out on a point to point wired Ampeg Jet combo that would have been great for ease of packing around and for practice around the house.

I love the Boogies. The Lonestar Special gets most use these days.
Blues Deluxe, after overhaul at Andrews Amp Lab, triode / pentode switch added and switching tubes this is super for blues, roots and classic R&R with pedals
The Vox Mini-3 is a great practice and bedroom amp that can get reasonably loud if you want.

Jimmyjames - I was intrigued by the Carvin Vintage 16 but after playing one at two Carvin shops but was just not for me. That was a number of years ago, so maybe if I had some significant time to play one and at more volume I could "warm up" to it.

I've been through a ton of amps, but nothing ever sounds as "right" to me as my Super Reverb. I picked up this "Noble" branded Magnatone a few years back off local CL:
It's fun, but not my favorite.

Recently did a selloff because I needed the money and took in a new Vox AC4 TV Mini in trade and it's a super fun house-volume amp!

Since we stopped gigging, I shed most of my amps (Dr Z, Fargen, etc.) Since I prefer a fat JTM-ish tone, I kept an Avatar 45 head and two Stone Age 1x12 cabs - one with a Creamback 65 and the other with a Scumback. Glorious tone. My grab and go is now a Blackstar ID30. I can't believe I went solid-state, but it serves the purpose.

Don't fret about solid-state, I picked up a Yamaha THR10 a little while ago and if I didn't know better I would have no clue that it wasn't a tube amp. I use it constantly. If I gigged I would even consider the 100W version that just came out.

i use a rivera knucklehead 55 and a drz m12 with my '14 legacy special and '15 fallout. the rivera does great cleans and lots of options for gain and boosts.

I remember back in the mid to late 1970s Yamaha introduced their solid state G amp series. They were not bad, but when you pushed them, the distortion was unpleasant and they sounded overly compressed. One amp line I liked was the Marshall AVT series, a hybrid amp using a tube for coloration in the preamp stage and a solid state damping effect in the power stage. One of the few hybrids that sound good.

The major factor with tube amps, is no matter how good the circuit is, the tubes being made today are its weakest link and nowhere near the quality of tubes produced at the height of the tube era.

i second that. i have gigged with a marshall avt100 for the past 10 yrs. great sound, clean cleans, nice marshall crunch on the OD channels, very versatile with interactive EQ, and durable. marginal on-board digital effects however - never used them.

I'm sure there is some truth to that statement . If only for the fact of the sheer volume of tubes produced. It is a niche market now, but I would think there were just as many variances then as there is now. Of course, NOS tubes are available for ever increasing prices. Which might be worth the investment if you used them for high end audio equipment or an older amp that wasn't abused or moved around much. In the end people will use what sounds best to their ears. It is so subjective.

I think it's just the other way 'round. Since quite some time some of the new production tubes (especially the chinese) are at least on par with the good ones from the golden era. My uncle (RIP) was one of the tube designers at Telefunken and he always confirmed that the quality was all over the place then, and this was by design ('low grade' tubes and manufacturing processes were specifically designed to cut cost in mass production).

Using a Dr. Z Therapy with a 1x12 cab loaded with a C-Gold and a 66' Fender BF Bandmaster with a shorty J-Design cab with a 1990 Eminence Fender Gold label speaker also have the original 66' Fender 2x12 cab loaded with the original 1964 Jensen speakers !!

For guitar, my brand new Comanche goes through a relatively new Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb. They seem to be a great match, but the bridge pickup might get shrill at high volume. (I've ordered the Will Ray Z-coil for fatter bridge tone.) I also have a Roland Cube 60, but haven't even tried the Comanche through it yet. It's mostly a backup amp for the guitarists I play with, but is darned good for a relatively cheap SS amp IMO.

I only play gigs on bass, and there it's an M-2500, JB, and SB-2 (and a Fender Jazz) going through G-K MB-500 and 700RB-II heads and G-K Neo112 cabs. I also use a Roland Cube 100 for low volume situations, and the G&L basses sound fantastic with it, so much so that I'll probably start gigging with this amp in a band I recently joined.
