US 96 legacy with Fender Eric Johnson pups..

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

US 96 legacy with Fender Eric Johnson pups..

Post by gratefuljed »

Glad you folks are not in the room, I've got bad gas:) I acquired a loaded pickguard with the Fender Eric Johnson strat pups and started looking for a project. I didn't want to go cut the tree, sand, route, prime,ect..you get the idea so what I did was start locally looking for a cheap MIM strat (I wanted a cheap guitar with the EJ pups, and they are cheaper than the tribute G&L's) What I found at Music Go Round was a US 96 Legacy, 3 tone alder sunburst with locking tuners and hect, a SD mini humbucker in the bridge for $500. Awesome guitar as you all well know. So I want to stick these pups in there, and I am going to. First I am just going to swap it all out, but what I wanted to know was whether or not I should eventually just put the pups in with the G&L electronics. I'm not a rocket scientist so I don't know all the values of all the stuff like pots, capacitors, ect..but I have no problem soldering.

Is there anyone here that has an opinion on this either way? Thanks!

Not sure if I understand the question. I have a couple of Legacys with DMarzios installed, both retain the stock G&L wiring with PTB.

I tend to ramble...

I can completely gut the legacy and install the loaded fender EJ pups and electronics

I can keep the stock G&L wiring with PTB and just install the EJ pups

I'll prolly do it both ways and go with what sounds better, but I was looking here for someone with knowledge/more experience who would give me the "whys" I should do it one way over the other.

I forgot the third and fourth way
3) dont do anything
4) use stock G&L pups with the Fender electronics

I guess my premise is the EJ pups will sound better, I suppose the G&L PTB electronics are better than the Fender
