Questions about my ASAT Classic S semi - your insight please

Post by dominic »

Hey folks - just picked up this ASAT Classic S semi - hollow (no f hole) in a trade. This is my 5th G&L so I know a little about them, but all my others were bought new and came with the build sheet. On this one, I am guessing at a few things and wanted to see if you all can help me fill in the blanks. By the way, this is "the one" for me (ahead of my Anderson, Red Rocket, B3, Collings, Gretsch, Fender, other G&L, Alvarez, Taylor, and Gibson guitars)....based on the music I am doing now, this guitar is the perfect sound and feel. I already have MFDs in other guitars but they work especially well in this one.

OK - so I know there was a special run of these in 2007 and then they went into production...is this one of the 100 made in 2007? If so, these were all Swamp Ash? Looks like a tinted maple neck...is this the "gun oil tint with polished gloss"? And, the neck feels just a bit more comfortable then my other G&Ls with the Classic C 1A....maybe this is a slim C?

...I like this one so much I am considering a new custom build of the same guitar except for a rosewood fingerboard, tobacco burst finish, and body binding.

Thanks in advance!

The serial number certainly falls within the 2007 range. I have one from the 2004 run and it is serial number CLF31700. Yours has the beautiful GOT neck.I-- Darwin

You might very well be right. There is no other clear indication whether it is part of the 25 Butterscotch Blondes in the sense that these guitars did not come with a special certificate nor CCD log of headstock. He're a link to a web page on my 2007 ASAT Classic 'S'.

Yes, it is one of 25 of the Butterscotch Blonde finished 2007 Special Builds. It was registered by a previous owner (and still is) in our G&L Registry,
but was listed as the standard production model. There is no mention that it is semi-hollow without F-hole nor the build year.
I changed the model name in the Registry to reflect it as a Special Build. The standard production model did not come out until 2008.
Please do edit the registry entry and change ownship to yourself.

The neck tint is a Gun-oil tint with a Glossy finish.

The standard production model only comes as a solid body, but you might be able to request it as a Semi-Hollow (with or without F-hole).
Check with a G&L dealer to see if you can order it the way you want it.

Nice score!

Craig - thanks for the database work and I will update further! I still can't get over how good this sounds......I have other G&L semis WITH f-hole and they are not quite as "juicy", so not sure if that is part of the equation. It is also my only G&L maple fingerboard....if / when I special order I am going with mahogany because I prefer the feel and look of it to maple, but I hope I don't loose something tonally by switching off of maple....

Now I see why the neck on this one feels different than my others; it has a 12" radius......

G&L does not offer Mahogany necks as an option, though. See: July 1, 2015-present G&L U.S. Specifications and Options.
