More gear porn of my ASAT Alnico

Post by Nubs »

Here are some more porn pics. Sorry I couldn't directly link the images here. They're too big to post here:

I'm totally in LOVE with this thing! The sexy looks, the buttery smooth action, and the ever-so-versatile tone makes this baby a definite keeper! It is quickly becoming my #1 replacing my Belair Green Bluesboy.

Here are the specs:

* Alder body with G&L Himalayan Blue finish
* OLS (Old Leo Spec) body width which results in an overall lighter guitar (1.625” ASAT body depth vs. 1.780" depth)
* 1-ply white pickguard
* Model Logo Deletion on the headstock (normally would read "ASAT Classic")
* Vintage Tint Gloss hard rock maple neck with Modern Classic profile (9.5" radius)
* Medium Jumbo frets

What do you think?

I like it. How does the OLS body feel? Headstock looks naked without the model name though.

When did G&L go back to those satin finished Sperzel tuners?

The OLS is definitely lighter. Compared to it, by Bluesboy feels like a tank. I don't really notice the depth difference when I'm playing and it's visually marginal of a difference.

I'm not sure about the tuners either. I asked my sales guy & he said, "They actually put standard Sperzels on it. Not locking, but still incredibly nice tuners. Not sure exactly why, but these are much better than the G&L die-cast ones they usually use." Personally I would have preferred ones with a chrome finish...wasn't aware they were putting these on. But They seem to be very nice & I'm not going to fuss over them.

Perhaps Craig can chime in with additional info on them?

beautiful , the tuners wouldn't bother me ...... like the DFS upgrade , the standard has the chrome and glitter but a step down in performance

G&L uses 2 brands of tuning machines: the shiny chrome Schaller machines with G&L stamped on them, and the matte Sperzels. Locking machines are usually Sperzels and if you have the one, you can easily change to the other; the positioning pins are in the same place. The pins differ in location between Sperzel and Schaller so you cannot easily switch brands.

I have seen both brands in black chrome (Schaller) and black anodized (Sperzel) too.

Which brand is used on what guitar is a crap-shoot. I believe it merely depends on what's in stock at the moment of assembly.

That guitar is gorgeous. If it was human, it would look sexy even if it was dressed in a sack.
:luv:
I find Sperzels every bit as good as Schallers. I have G&Ls with both, and like them fine.
The white switch tip is a nice detail, to go with that lovely singleply guard that suits the blue.
And I like the logo delete a lot, I think it's one of G&L's best finish ideas. Just "G&L" is discretely classy.

Ahh you noticed the white switch tip. Out of all the places I posted this, you're the only one to say anything about it. I had an extra one laying around & thought it would look better on this. G&L should really offer that as an option IMO. Not every guitar lends itself to a black switch tip.
