NGD: '96 ASAT Classic (now with blackguard!)

Post by Oig »

Funny story. I got this from a cameraman staking out Tom Brady during the ball tampering hearing. Literally out of the back of his van...
It's far from perfect, and more beaten than he let on, but still in great shape overall. Apart from a really thorough cleaning, I had to replace the original saddles - they were rusted through and totally useless. This is my first USA G&L and my first experience with MFD's, and I'm loving them so far. Loving the presence of the maple board too. The 7.5 radius is going to take some getting used to though. Overall, it's very cool. OK, proof...

Hey Oig,

That's a real beauty ya got, and great story to boot. :happy0065: It doesn't look too beat up to me. The MFD's have a flavor of their own, but IMHO they are a sweet sound. Keep sending reports on your opinion of the guitar and any sound clips.

ENJOY

Thanks! I've been wondering what it'd look like with a bakelite guard. Like this:

Looks great! But the pearl's great too.

Just got this guard from Chandler. Love the way it looks. Such a sweet guitar. I've barely touched anything else for months. :D

Can never go wrong with a black PG.
I was never a fan of "mother of toilet seat".

NICE! That black pickguard really does it. I have a Bluesboy that looks a lot like yours. Same finish, semi hollow no f-hole, 7.5 radius. Rosewood, pearl pickguard. Humbucker in the neck. But ours look a lot alike. After I typed that I realized they sound totally different. But they look a lot alike.

I really like the vibe the black guard has on this guitar. You are making think maybe I should swap mine out. My very first G&L I ever bought had a black metal pick guard. The finish was like textured. And the control cover was black metal with the same small texture. I have always wanted another pickguard like that.

I am thinking maybe I should swap mine out for black. I really like that black guard on that honeyburst. Maybe I could find one of those metal ones like I had on my first G&L.

Where did you get the pickguard from?

Oh I forgot, is this your first 7.5? I kinda got that impression. My Bluesboy is my only guitar with a 7.5 radius. I tell ya. I LOVE it! It has such a vibe to it. It makes me play different than I would on my other guitars. I am a low action guy too. My hands require light strings and touch action. Most of my guitars have 98% straight necks and 12" radius.
My average action height is .040 at the 12th fret or 3/64ths at the 17th fret. This is for the 1st string btw.

My Bluesboy is set to .050 at the 12th. And on the low side of .050 if you know what I mean. I think this is considered low for having a 7.5. The notes don't fret out on bends or anything either. Anytime I let a player play it, they are in awe with the feel of it. Very unique since most guys are on a 12" radius. I think it makes me play more "old skool" I guess you could say. It makes me want to play blusey or twangy.

I am curious how you like the 7.5 and if you notice it changes the way you play?

That's a sweet find!

I like the original PG but the Black makes it look Classic! I'm envious!

Thanks! The guard is from Chandler (Pickguard Heaven) - http://pickguards.us/pricegandl.html
They warned that it might require some slight modification to fit, but it dropped right on. They're a good bunch of guys to deal with, and their pricing is competitive too. :happy0065:
About the 7.5 radius, it's my only one at the moment. It took a while to get used to, but apart from that I don't feel like it's really changed how I play too much. Maybe I'm a little more considered in approach? Dunno. I am playing it more than anything else at the moment. It's a beast 8-)

I have two guitars with a 7.5 radius, my Fender Road Worn Strat and my Fender Classic 50's Strat.

I like a ridiculously low action and I noticed some high frets so I had a fret level done on both of them. They both play good now, especially the Classic 50's.

It looks way better with the black guard, but then again I have never been a fan of pearl guards. Your guitar makes me want a classic . My 86 ASAT is 7.5 and is my only one at that radius. All my others are 12" . I don't think it makes me play any different. Well maybe it does, it makes me play a little bit more proper , technique wise anyway. That finish of yours is becoming one of my favorites. Great guitar you have !
