ASAT Classic S vs S500

Post by lefty_major »

According to the G&L site the ASAT Classic S and the S500 both use G&L MFD single coil pickups. The Classic S states it uses the S500 middle position pu.

What are the differences between the neck and bridge pickup on these two guitars? They’re not the same, right?

Thanks!

The neck and bridge pickups of the ASAT Classic S and the S-500 are not the same.

The ASAT Classic S neck and bridge pickups are the G&L Magnetic Field Design Tele style single coils pickups.
The neck pickup of the ASAT Classic S being the G&L Magnetic Field Design ASAT Classic Custom single coil (not to be confused with the ASAT Classic Custom model neck pickup).
This pickup has the same polarity and wind as the bridge pickup. See: http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/GALLERY2/ma ... temId=8542.

The S-500 neck and bridge pickups are the G&L Magnetic Field Design Strat style single coils pickups.

Only the middle pickup is the same for those models. It is the G&L Magnetic Field Design Strat style single coils middle pickup which is RW/RP.

See: List of pickups used in G&L guitars in the G&L Knowledgebase.

Hope this helps.

Craig,
Yes, this helps. Thank you. That chart is helpful too. I forgot the ASAT Classic S changed the neck pu after 2011.

Pickup has the same wind/polarity as the G&L Magnetic Field Design Tele style single coil bridge pickup. Thus it cancels hum in positions 2 and 4 and gives you that “in between” or “pseudo out of phase sound” that is characteristic of Legacys and S-500s….

I have a Classic “S” that is becoming my favorite. That’s why I’m kind of wondering about the Classic S compared to the sound of the S “strat on steroids” 500.
