What is the correct volume pot for an ASAT Classic Three?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

What is the correct volume pot for an ASAT Classic Three?

Post by charleyrich »

I need to replace the volume pot on an ASAT Classic Three. I am still using the original which is from 1998.

What is the correct part to use? Is there an after market pot I could use that turns more smoothly? I have sprayed and lubricated and its time for a new one.

Thanks,

Charley

You want a 250k audio taper pot. CTS is a popular brand and probably a good place to start

Another source is the G&L On-Line Store. Here's a link: http://g-l-online-store.myshopify.com/c ... ntiometers.

Hope this helps.

Craig,

Are the G&L pots easy to turn? I do a lot of volume swells with my pinkie and need a pot that moves effortlessly. The pot on my other G&L ASAT Deluxe is very smooth, but I suspect that it is a different pot than the one for the ASAT Classic.

Regards,

Charley

My recommendation would be to get the push/pull pot because it has very free movement and the bonus of allowing you to wire up the pickup expander feature.
The ASAT Classic Three did not come with that feature. Here's the link to the push/pull page: http://g-l-online-store.myshopify.com/c ... entiometer.
If you decide to go this route and include the pickup expander feature, see this picture diagram for the ASAT Classic 'S' in our Gallery, to see how it should be wired up.

Hope this helps.

What does the pickup expander provide, sound wise?

From this post, What is the expander switch used on many of the models? :
Here's how the expander switch works:

Basically it just ties both the bridge and neck pickup together, meaning that whenever the neck or bridge pickup is selected,
you also get the other. After it's all said and done there's a total of seven different combinations.
So in regular (or non-expanded mode) you have these combinations:

Position 1 - Bridge
Position 2 - Bridge & Middle
Position 3 - Middle
Position 4 - Middle & Neck
Position 5 - Neck

In expanded mode you get:

Position 1 - Bridge & Neck (same as position 5)
Position 2 - Bridge & Middle & Neck (same as position 4)
Position 3 - Middle
Position 4 - Neck & Middle & Bridge (same as position 2)
Position 5 - Neck & Bridge(same as position 1)
In the expanded mode, Position 1 and 5 will get the ASAT Classic combination of neck and bridge.
Position 2 and 4 is the unknown combination sound wise, since this combination has not been done by the factory.
I suspect it will be fairly close to the ASAT Classic 'S' in the same position, the difference being the middle pickup (RW/RP AC pickup vs RW/RP S-500 pickup).
Perhaps another member has tried this combination and could give their impression of this combination sound wise.

Hope this helps.
