So I sent the standard tortoise pickguard off to pickguard heaven to get a black one done. Just got it back & I think it looks a ton better:

Here's the original:

I like it, though I've never been a fan of tortoise shell pickguards. The black looks nice with the black dot fret markers.

That looks like two different guitars. The wood grain is different, am I just seeing things? Looks great with the black btw.

No, now that you mention it, you're correct. I forgot I took the original pic when I had my first ASAT. I traded that in & eventually got another one which is the one I have now. It's not going anywhere.

Good catch man!

The black guard looks a lot better. I have a natural finish ASAT, 3-ply black and it looks great. There something about the natural ASAT that is just awesome looking.

Tortoise pick guards can look awesome -and I've built and sold several Tele's equipped with tortoise guards, but IMHO, a beautiful natural wood guitar doesn't need another embellishment and a black guard is just the right color that won't try to compete with the natural beauty of the wood.

Take it from this old geezer: My warning sirens sound every time I am attracted by a girl with too much makeup. Same with guitars. Your decision to use a black guard turned your instrument into an honest beauty -although you might now try a matte-finish pickguard without the shiny gloss... The old Bakelite pick guards that Leo used did not survive for very long, but they are sooo cool. I made one from a black scrap plastic piece and yes, I love it on a natural Swamp Ash instrument!

Play on and let her voice speak for herself, your guitar certainly doesn't need tortoise...
Without music, the world would be a mistake.
