Current G&L ebony quality
Just curious how the current stock of ebony that G&l is using for fingerboards is looking? With good ebony seemingly getting harder to find, I'm noticing a lot of guitars with "streaky" ebony boards.. Is the usa G&L stuff remaining dark and uniform across the board lately?

Here are some recent examples from the factory photos posted on G&L's facebook page: Photos of Ebony fretboards ....companydamned wrote:Just curious how the current stock of ebony that G&l is using for fingerboards is looking? Hope this helps.

Those necks certainly look traditionally dark, very smart.
I believe, though, that perhaps we need to embrace "streaky" ebony in this lifetime.
It's structurally no worse than black ebony. And our preference for black has just meant that a LOT of streaky wood has been left to rot on the ground instead of being used, and this has contributed to something of a crisis in ebony production and buying.
Bob Taylor is now heavily involved in trying to keep production sane and stable, and supplies many other makers with ebony. These customers are saying "Nice one, Bob. And good leadership putting the streaky wood on your own guitars; just be sure you keep sending us the nice black stuff, eh?"
From now on, I'll be reminding myself that wood looks nice and variations in it are characterful and enjoyable. The forest-felling Victorian western plunderer should be extinct, not the trees.
